The article titled “Saving Endangered Photographs” by Sarah Evert discusses how technology has uncovered both fraudulent images and how to identify and save the many delicate historic images.

Days and hours are Wednesday to Friday 12 to 4 pm and Saturdays and Sundays an extra half hour, from noon to 4:30 pm.

Spring Toronto International Camera Show March 24, 2013

The Toronto Don Valley Hotel at 1250 Eglinton Avenue East.
Enter off Wynford Drive – good parking in the hotel lots.
Admission only $7 – 10 am to 3 pm

** parking is free in any of the metered spots above ground or in the underground on Level H **
VENDORS: If you haven’t already confirmed with Gary, please email him at gv.perry@gmail.com to confirm your table rental. Table charge is $50 and includes entry for vendor and one helper (all helpers must arrive before 10am and be actually working with the vendor).  Vendors are expected to occupy their tables until 3pm.

The end of January 2013, when Vistek offered the NEX-6 and kit lens on sale for a great price, I leaped at the chance. Sold out! Oh Well, I left my order up anyway. To my surprise and delight, the camera arrived a week and a half later.

The NEX-6 is nice to use. Compared to my NEX-5, it is much faster in operation, has the flash built-in, and most importantly, it has a superb eye-level viewfinder built-in as well. Less important is the standard hot shoe and wi-fi capability. However, I have found the wi-fi capability of the camera to be very useful for remote shooting and image uploads. In terms of applications, Sony is no Apple by a long shot. The best you can say is that the Sony apps don’t crash… I eventually got the wi-fi apps to work, sort of. Continue reading →

In Memory of George Gilbert

George-Gilbert-by-RL-smOn November 1st, 2012 the Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Portland, Oregon announced the death of George Gilbert (October 13, 1922 – November 1, 2012). Mister Gilbert was a well known writer of photographic articles in the popular press of the mid 20th century. He spoke at our society at our October 1995 and June 2004 meetings. He is perhaps best known for his “Leica Freedom Train” article. In his 2004 visit, George was photographed by our journal editor Bob Lansdale, whose uncredited portrait of Mr Gilbert appears in various sources.  You can click on the Skyline Memorial Gardens name to link to the memorial posted on their site, The memorial is available online until December 1, 2013. Photographic Canadiana 38-4

Toronto. The latest issue of Photographic Canadiana is set to be printed shortly. Editor Lansdale has created an exciting issue to wrap up the current 2012/3 season. A milestone event is the publication of part one of the thesis from our first Thesis Award award winner sol (not Sol) Legault who is finishing the Ryerson University MA program in photographic preservation and collections management this spring.

Winter Camerama has Good turnout

Ed Warner, who attended Sunday, offers this report: “Good show today, every table FULL, lots of shoppers, to the extent that sometimes it was hard to get to see the stuff on the tables.   However, THAT is a GOOD thing, because it shows that people are coming out to the shows, and “The TRADITION” is not going to fade away, at least NOT SOON. See you at the next [PHSC] meeting [February 20th, 2013].  Ed
