Check out the latest news and keep in touch with other enthusiasts! You can click here or on the facebook icon at left. I have also added a small linked icon to the right sidebar for easy access to our facebook page as I add posts.

If you need to search for us on facebook, use “PHSC-Photographic” in the search box and that should get us.

TOOLS of the TRADE Sunday, April 7th, 2013

TORONTO, February 17th, 2013. The spring Tools of the Trade show for 2013 will be held on Sunday, April 7th, 2013 from 10am to 3pm at the Pickering Recreation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm Road, just 15 minutes east of Toronto. Click here or on the icon at left to see detailed directions.

toolgroupPHSC Member Ed Warner who is a past president of the PHSC, is now editor of Yesterday’s Tools the official journal of the Tool Group of Canada. The Tool Group of Canada was established about 30 years ago for collectors who specialize in the tools used by the craftsmen of days gone by.

To many of us, a camera is a collectible but it is also a tool used by a professional photographer. Hence a few members of the PHSC are also members of the Tool Group. When he was alive, both my dad and I were members. His interest was mechanics’ tools – the wrenches, tire jacks and other tools used by the automobile mechanic while I was interested in old wood-working tools. Over the years that I was a members of both groups, I attended the occasional Tools of the Trade show where I saw many kinds of tools including cameras and microscopes, not just hand tools.

THE TINTYPE STUDIO

NEXT TORONTO MEETING: Wednesday, February 20th, 2013
THE TINTYPE STUDIO
tumblr_meq0poJpUw1qkt8ozo1_500-smToronto’s Tintype Studio revisits a historical photographic tradition, creating a unique image on a metal surface. The Tintype Studio revives this process in its traditional context, the outdoor fair, by offering a fun, participatory, and retro take on the instant photograph. Its tintype portrait service and period-style booth give the public a chance to experience a chapter in the history of photography and take a piece home with them.  The studio members are Miles Collyer, Stu Sakai, Paul Sergeant and Greg Snow.  Join us tonight and discovery beauty of this old process that dates back to the wet-plate era and has survived in the hands of these modern day Tintype photographers.

The public is welcome.  Go to our Programs page for times and directions.

The Turofsky Brothers: Sports Photographers

James Trautman
by Ed Warner

James Trautman was born and grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey not far from the Newark Airport. He last spoke to us back on January 20, 2010. At that time he talked about the golden age of the Pan American Clippers based on his book on the famous flying boats (now in its second printing and widely distributed) This time he talks about the famous Turofsky brothers who covered the sports scene and day to day life in Toronto in much of the first half of the last century mostly from the Alexandra Studio that Lou bought and renamed.
