The PHSC currently offers three incentives for research into photographic history:
- Toronto Metropolitan (was Ryerson) University Thesis Prize is an annual award of $500 and a promise to publish given to the best Master’s thesis by a student enrolled in the Photographic Preservation and Collections Management Program at Toronto Metropolitan (was Ryerson) . The winning thesis must demonstrate writing skill and present innovative research into photographic history. Canadian content, context, or connections are of value but are not mandatory.
- Research Grant is a $500 grant awarded to a current member of the PHSC engaged in original research into photographic history. Canadian content, context, or connections are of value but are not mandatory.
- Offer to Publish is extended to work on photographic history that demonstrates its merit and original content. In special circumstances, a grant of up to $1,000, to a current member of the PHSC to aid in the publication of original research into photographic history in book or monograph form, can be awarded.

PHSC Toronto Metropolitan (was Ryerson) THESIS PRIZE
This prize is awarded to the best Master’s student paper based on original or innovative research into any aspect of photographic history. Canadian content is of value but is not mandatory.
Eligibility: Any student enrolled full-time, maintaining a passing grade, in the Photographic Preservation and Collections Management Program at Toronto Metropolitan (was Ryerson) University may submit for the prize through their program.
Award: $500 and a promise to publish all or part of the thesis in the PHSC journal, Photographic Canadiana. The publishing component of the award is mandatory. Acceptance of the monetary portion of the award constitutes an agreement on the part of the student to supply the PHSC with all or part of the thesis for publication, at the discretion of the journal editors. Any student failing to fulfill all requirements, including their submission of publishable material from the thesis by a set deadline, must forfeit and/or repay the monetary portion of the prize. Students unwilling or unable to publish with the journal are strongly advised not to submit their theses to the competition. The recipient is also encouraged to present their research to a PHSC monthly meeting, for which a separate honorarium will be paid (this presentation opportunity is encouraged but is not mandatory). The PHSC reserves the right to withdraw the award in any given year if no submission is considered of a satisfactory standard.
Procedure: Submissions are passed on to the PHSC as nominations by the PPCM program directors and professors. Winning thesis is chosen by a three-person PHSC panel. The panel’s decision is final.
Terms and Conditions: Minimum 40 pages double-spaced (10,000 words) to a maximum of 100 pages (25,000 words), excluding bibliography and acknowledgements. Paper must not have been previously published, and must have been written within the previous two years. Submitting a thesis for consideration to the Awards panel constitutes the student’s agreement that the PHSC may reproduce the work in whole or in part.
Deadline: August of each year. For internal deadlines within the PPCM program, please consult your advisor. The award will be presented at the Toronto Metropolitan (was Ryerson) School of Image Arts Awards evening held annually in November.
PHSC RESEARCH GRANT
This research grant is awarded to a current PHSC member, based on a proposed research topic intended for publication as a book or article, submission as a paper or dissertation in a PhD program, or delivery as a university conference paper.
Eligibility: Must be a PHSC member at the time of application and at the time of publication.
Award: $500 and a promise to publish all or part of the research in the PHSC journal, Photographic Canadiana. The publishing component of the award is mandatory. Acceptance of the monetary portion of the award constitutes an agreement on the part of the researcher to supply the PHSC with all or part of the research for publication, at the discretion of the journal editors. Any researcher failing to fulfill all requirements, including their submission of publishable material from the thesis by a set deadline, must forfeit and/or repay the grant. The PHSC reserves the right to withhold the grant in any given year if no submission is considered of a satisfactory standard.
Procedure: Submit a proposal (maximum four pages) outlining intended avenue of research. Proposals should indicate the topic, rationale for its choice and what it contributes to photographic history, intended research sources/techniques, previous completed research, expected schedule to complete research, and proposed final form for the research. A three-person PHSC panel will review the proposals and submit their nomination to the PHSC executive for approval. Executive decision is final.
Terms and Conditions: An applicant’s submission of a proposal for a grant constitutes an agreement that the PHSC may reproduce the completed research in a PHSC publication in whole or in part. The grant recipient also agrees to present on their research in progress to a PHSC monthly meeting. Recipient is not precluded from also receiving a publication grant. Research proposed must not have been previously published.
Deadline: Submissions can be made at any time.
PHSC PUBLISHING
The PHSC offers to aid in the editing, layout, preparation, as well as the publishing, of original research into Canadian photographic history. Under special circumstances, a grant of up to $1,000 to aid in the publication, in book or monograph form, of original research into photographic history, can also be awarded.
Eligibility: Must be a PHSC member at time of application and at the time of publication.
Procedure: Submit a written proposal (maximum four pages) outlining topic, format, and intended schedule, together with the manuscript and a sample of previously published work. A three-person PHSC panel will review the submissions. Submission to the PHSC is not an automatic guarantee of publication.
Terms and Conditions: Publishing will be offered to material which expands existing photographic knowledge or facilitates the application of existing knowledge. PHSC involvement is to be acknowledged within the publication. PHSC receives a predetermined number of copies for distribution and sale. Applicants agree that the PHSC may reproduce the work in whole or in part in other PHSC publications. Material should not have been previously published.
