Newsletter 12-8

We have something slightly different this time. The newsletter is a joint effort between journal editor Bob Lansdale and co-editor David Bridge. David is in the process of taking over the editorial duties for this pdf newsletter.

From Left: Cover, November speaker Jim Trautman, Book review Sudak book, Fall Fair and Boris Spremo exhibition, Mystery camera, unusual postcard.

This month, the November speaker is announced and the video shown in October are reviewed. The fall fair report and the Boris Spremo exhibit at the fall fair are covered. We have two book reviews. The first is on Josef Sudek by Maia Sutnik of the AGO and coincides with that institution’s exhibit of Sutnik’s work. The second is a book about Early Paper Stereoviews by the late John Cameron and Janice Schimmelman of MiPHS. There is a photo essay of the Daguerrien Seminar held in Baltimore earlier this month, plus a discussion of another mystery item – an unusual camera. The 13 page extravaganza wraps up with the usual columns.

Teague Exhibit

An interesting exhibit on Walter Teague was held earlier this year at the Madisonian Museum of Industrial Design in Waitsfield, Vermont. You can see a brief recap by Rick Soloway here that mentions our Photographic Canadiana issue 32-3 which featured a Teague article by Rick and Ralph London on the beautiful Kodak cameras designed by Mr Teague.

The recap is on Charlie Kameraman’s site which we have linked in this post as well as in our right sidebar about 2/3s down this page.

Last Spring’s show up on Flickr

A big thanks to member Jon Day-Reiner at Eighteen Percent Grey for generously snapping our spring 2012 fair and posting his images here in Flickr: 2012 PHSC Camera Fair – a set on Flickr

Jon lives with his partner Joanne in Toronto and shoots film and creates hand-made photographs using historical and alternative processes. He says “the tangibility of the silver and iron processes is a tactile counterbalance to the fleeting ephemera of the digital world. I love the anticipation of waiting to see what will come out of the fix, or seeing a platinum print appear like magic in the developer. In my alternative process printing, I work primarily with platinum and palladium, argyrotypes, kallitypes and cyanotypes. I am still perfecting my technique, but learning more every day“.

Photographic Canadiana 38-2

All members should have issue 38-2 soon or by now – it hit the postoffice the beginning of this week.

Issue 38-2 from Left: Cover with Child Portrait from late 1870s, Matt Isenburg and wife Elizabeth at the time his collection was sent to Toronto, the tintype of three British soldiers assigned to Canada during the Fenian raids, Stan White’s Kodak Duex, and speakers Alana West and Dr Irwin Reichstein.

The image on the front cover, c1870s, is worth a year’s membership alone! It is a Chromotype with that process’s typical sharp darks and warm tones. The lead story is the sale of Matt Isenburg’s fabulous Daguerreian collection to the Toronto AMC . This is followed by a lengthy and  well researched report called  A Soldier’s Tintype. Dating back to the Fenian raids shortly before Confederation, the soldiers in the tintype have been meticulously researched by member Louise Freyburger. Louise has a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science and her work is a valuable addition to the writings of our journal. In Toronto Notes, Mark Singer reports on the last two Toronto speakers before the summer break (Alana West in May, and Dr Irwin Reichstein in June, both of whom won PHSC awards for their work), Treasures column covers Stan White’s Kodak Duex, and this issue wraps up with George Dunbar’s always interesting column, Browsing through our Exchanges.
