French Camera Display in Japan this fall.

Our good friend Sam Mabuchi of  the All Japan Classic Camera club (AJCC) wrote recently that the AJCC will be holding a French Camera Exhibition this winter in Tokyo. The exhibition is an official exhibition by the JCII Camera Museum in Tokyo (click English on the bottom of the left side bar). Click the small image (at left on this post) for a full size poster.

The French embassy in Tokyo will also  support this exhibition of some 300+ French cameras which includes two original Daguerreotype cameras,  a Giroux owned by the museum and a Chevalier on loan from a member of the  AJCC.

The exhibition will be held from the 20th November 2012 to 24th February 2013. An exhibition album will be published and sold at the museum shop during the exhibition. The location of the museum is shown by map on the museum’s home page.

Film Rescue International

Digitizing the now old chemical based films is becoming a popular enterprise. Out in Saskatchewan is a small company dedicated to  processing and transferring  still and motion picture vintage, expired and outdated film. They will not only process the old film you discover in a camera tucked away years ago, but they will transfer it to a new digital medium. Thanks to Robyn Jensen of Film Rescue for bringing their services to my attention. Click the icon at left to visit their web site. On the site are prices (reasonable) and links to sample images including B&W prints captured from old unprocessed Kodachrome! At the bottom of the home page are links to Flickr! and Facebook with more samples and information. They are also beginning a quality scanning service for negatives. See the web site for details.

It was purchased by the Archive of Modern Conflict (AMC) where the organization and cataloging of the collection will be guided by Daguerreian Society president (and PHSC past president) Mike Robinson of Toronto who has been appointed AMC Director of Education and Research Programs. Our 2nd anual trunk show is this Sunday rain or shine. Editor Lansdale’s latest newsletter announces this delightful show. Dr Reichstein’s excellent June talk on Montreal’s Craig and Bleury area, home to the city’s 19th century English photographers is reviewed by Mark Singer. Another edition of Ottawa’s Professor Lambert’s Paper Memorabilia covers Josiah Bruce’s studio ads in Toronto’s late 1800s satirical magazine Grip. The From the Net column covers the latest items including the Fisheye Baby 110 camera and a way to scan with your iPhone. Details of the summer workshops at the Niagara School of Imaging and George Eastman House are also covered, as are the usual coming events and want ads. All in all, and 8 page summer extravaganza. The Very Rich Life of a Montreal Studio

NEXT TORONTO MEETING: Wednesday, June 20th, 2012.
Irwin Reichstein: The Very Rich Life of a Montreal Studio.

Dr. Irwin Reichstein was a guest speaker in May 2008 talking on “The Multigraph.” This time he will discuss the building at the corner of Craig and Bleury Streets in Montreal. This building was one of the centres of photography in 19th century Montreal.

Most of the best known Anglophone photographers of the day had studios on that corner or within a few blocks. The events on Craig and Bleury, some quite dramatic, were also  well documented. Dr Reichstein is a computer science professor at Carleton in Ottawa. In his spare time, he delves into Canadian photographic history. Photographic Canadiana has been graced with his studies on James Inglis, on The Early Saronys and on The Multigraph.

Dr. Reichstein will be honoured on the 20th with a Research Grant for his continued research and support of our journal.

Wow! I don’t know how he does it! Editor Lansdale has knocked out another winner. A sixteen page extravaganza on photographic history. Included are notice of Dr Reichstein’s June talk “The Very Rich Life of a Montreal Studio” dating back to an era when Montreal was Canada’s premiere city; Mark Singer’s report on Alana West’s fascinating talk last month (both doctorate student Alana West, and Dr Reichstein are recent recipients of the PHSC’s prestigious publication award); A story on the Spring Photographica-fair last month by Mark Singer complemented by Bob Lansdale’s photo essay; The story of former high school teacher and military and camera collector Ed James of Elkhorn, Manitoba; a fine excerpt from Motivated Magazine on Canada’s famous photographer George Hunter; plus the usual, reports, new items and items of interest to collectors.
