Well another year is nearly over and editor Bob Lansdale has whipped up another lip-smacking edition of his now famous newsletter. This issue sees an eleventh year of publication well underway. Editor Lansdale announces the annual show-and-tell this month and his staff report on the October and November shows. The “News from the Net” covers an innovative camera that purports to focus after exposure. And a novel old 1800s box camera by the Monroe company is reviewed. Felix Russo’s latest “PhotoEd” magazine which features the ever popular 3D technology is issued and PHSC President Clint Hryhorijiw reports on his recent participation in the Wolverhampton show in England this fall.

Tom Bochsler & Bob Chambers: 115 Years of Photography

Tom Bochsler and Bob Chambers

Tom Bochsler’s career began in Hamilton photographing with a 4×5 Speed Graphic. Electronic flash was the next phase of change until the Hasselblad became the workhorse. Social and press photography evolved into commercial/industrial, his specialty for the years ahead. Industry photography in that era was “dirty, dark and dangerous.” It’s a photo-biography of his work experiences and opportunities. Visit Art of Industry for more…
Bob Chambers took a summer job as a darkroom person/assistant photographer at The Welland Tribune. He lasted 31 years as a newspaper photographer mostly at the Hamilton Spectator. In 1988 he started his own business in Burlington doing advertising and industrial photography. This final 18 year period saw Bob do photography in every province and seeing all three oceans while on projects for many clients.

Shannon Perry: World War II Colour Photographs

Shannon Perry is a member of Library and Archives Canada in Gatineau Hills, Quebec. She holds a Masters degree in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management from Ryerson and GEH. Shannon is interested in the 19th century Canadian photographic industry and will begin working towards a PhD in Canadian Photographic History at De Montfort University in Leicester, England this fall.

Shannon’s talk tonight touched on a period that is unfamiliar to most of us. These are the recently discovered selection of World War II (WWII) colour photographs. Many people are unaware that colour film existed before WWII. Kodachrome was released in 1935 for 16mm movies and a year later for 35mm slide film. By November 1938 there was a professional Kodachrome available for use as sheet film and for aerial photography*. Continue reading →

Photographic Canadiana 37-3

This afternoon, a warm and sunny mild November in the city, we packaged the journal 37-3 ready to hit the post office this Monday. Editor Lansdale has two new writers in this issue, Sharron Perry of the Library and Archives Canada up in the Ottawa area who will be doing a regular column on images in the Archives, and Edith Cuerrier, Memorial University who graciously published a version of her thesis project on the visit to Newfoundland by the famous inventor George Eastman of Kodak fame.

Journal 37-3 Dec 2011 to Jan 2012. Cover, a new Daguerreotype by Palmer, Gary Blakeley's new ZeitagTO app, a famous visitor to Newfoundland, Claxton's photo of a shave on the Steamer "James Domville", and Edith Cuerrier, Memorial University, St John's NL, one of two new authors in this issue.

Gary Blakeley: Zeitag

Toronto photographer Gary Blakeley has spent thirty years as a graphic designer for arts, academic, and business communications. He has lengthy expertise in print production, computer graphics, and information technology. Running through his photography are themes of architecture, travel, and militaria.

The Zeitag app is currently a hot topic and we were honoured to have the man responsible as our guest speaker. Gary Blakeley is a member of the society as well as a graphic designer. He described an application for the iPhone and iPad that shows views of the city intersection you are located at. The app is called Zeitag. Zeit is German for time and tag is for tagging or locating. He worked with Valentina Vogman and Sveta Fedarava to source the images. Continue reading →

Colour photos were very limited until the late 1940s. Imagine “discovering” 1000s of colour images from WWII that were transferred to Library and Archives Canada in 2008 from the National Defence Image Library! Shannon’s presentation is about that “discovery.” Although primarily of a public relations nature, the collection is a fascinating study of the early commercial colour technology as it was tested in the studio and in the field by combat photographers such as Ken Bell.
