Basically it is a broad overview of our multi-faceted careers, mostly showing dramatic images, accompanied by much description of same, with the expectation of fielding many interesting comments and questions from the savvy members of the PHSC.”

International Leica History Symposium 2011

PITTSBURG PA, October 14 – 16, 2011. The Leica Historical Society of America is hosting the International Leica History Symposium at the Holiday Inn, Pittsburg (at University Center). Friday evening there is a reception and presentation by Leica photographer Ronald Hill. The next day, Saturday,  features a series of presentations on  Leica history and design. Sunday wraps up  with the  traditional trade show. Editor Lansdale has pulled together a 14 page number covering many of the fall events, coverage of our first Boot Sale, 94 year old member Harry Joy’s lovely B&W exhibit in Toronto, A mystery camera query by the Sallows Gallery in Goderich – this camera measures 13.5 x 8.5 x 11.5 inches and takes an 8 x 10 inch plate, The WCPHA emblem redeemed – why the old timers hid under their cloth at times, and some more paper memorabilia thanks to Lindsay Lambert.

Photographic Canadiana 37-2

You know fall is arriving when the photo shows start up again and editor Bob Lansdale pulls his second issue of the journal together. This year he offers three major stories to stir your imagination.

Lorne Shields writes about his historically important image of velocipedes and why it is so interesting to both photo and bicycle collectors. Irwin Reichstein in Ottawa provides a very detailed look at the Saronys, a famous family of 19th century photographers. John Marriage in England offers an extensive insight into the research needed to identify the photograph of an unusual bridge – including help from some PHSC members. All this and the usual columns “Toronto notes”, and “Browsing Through Our Exchanges”.

Editor Lansdale starts this issue with a synopsis of the PHSC activities for this fall. We celebrate the Gallery show “Memorable Moments” showing member Harry Joy’s 1950s and 60s B&W photographs of Kensington Market and other Toronto neighbourhoods. Stephen Bulger Gallery is proud to remember Ruth Orkin and the 60th Anniversary of her famous “American Girl in Italy” photograph. Lorne Shields was surprised at the NSA meeting this summer where his article “Early Cycling in Stereos” won the 2011 NSA “Best Stereo World Article” award. “Professor” Lindsay Lambert entertains readers with paper memorabilia. Details are provided on the big PhotoHistory symposium coming this October across the lake in Rochester. And there are the regular coming events, want ads and more.

Harry Joy Photos at Miles Nadal Gallery

Canada's Game 1960sTORONTO August 1, 2011. Harry Joy at 90+ is one of PHSC’s oldest members. His photographs of Kensington Market and other Toronto neighbourhoods in the 1950s and 60s are on display from August 1 to September 7, 2011 at the Miles Nadal Gallery in the Jacobs Lounge. The Miles Nadal JCC is at 750 Spadina (corner of Bloor). The gallery is open 9 to 9 on weekdays and 9 to 7 on weekends. Easy access via the TTC Subway.

Tom Bochsler on Radio this Saturday, August 6th

The Art of Industry

You may know Tom from the photographic industry, or his visits to our meetings. This Saturday (August 6th) at 11 am Tom will be interviewed on CHML radio Hamilton at am900 by  Host Judy Marsales and Jim Carrier. Judy’s passion, besides operating a very successful Real Estate business, is promoting the City of Hamilton…. and Tom’s book ‘The Art of Industry‘, illustrates some of the history of Hamilton over the past 50+ years. It will be an interesting time. If you are able, please tune in (Tom is an excellent speaker as you may recall from his talk at our meeting back in March 2006).
