Everett Roseborough

LONDON, Ontario. Our editor-emeritus and honorary life member, Everett Roseborough passed away peacefully at 5 pm this afternoon. Ev was editor of our journal Photographic Canadiana from November 1987 through November 1996 during which time he modernized the magazine’s style, tightened up deadlines, and increased original Canadian content. Ev was instrumental in encouraging our current editor, Robert Lansdale, to take over editorship. While his profession was studio photography, his interests were wide reaching and included playing the church organ and investigating the marvels of microscopy. His career spanned the 1930s through the 1990s. He was 98.

High Dynamic Range Photography

I received an email from Jennifer Bedford of Cambridge Galleries, just a short drive west of Toronto.  They are offering a course this spring in capture and creation of High Dynamic Range images. The instructor is well known photographer Tom Vogel. As you can see from Tom’s site, his work is superb! (It’s a Flash based site, so it loads slow, but is well worth the wait.) Continue reading

Tele-Arton f/5.5 240mm

Schneider Kreuznach Tele-Arton f/5.5 240mm

The other day I pulled out my old Tele-Arton having in mind shooting the full moon – lousy weather deferred that plan.

I picked up this little handful in the mid 1980s at one of our Photographica-fairs. Jim McKeen had used the lens to photograph birds – his hobby was bird-watching. The lens is capable of very high quality images – fitting since Jim used it with his Leica and a bellows. Continue reading

Making Kodak Film

Making Kodak Film

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. November 7, 2010. Do you have fond memories of Kodak film? Verichrome, Super-XX, Tri-X, Kodachrome, Ektachrome and all those other marvellous and magical bits of plastic that recorded your life? Then you will want a copy of Robert Shanebrook’s “Making Kodak Film” an illustrated story of the state-of-art photographic film manufacturing process in the Kodak facilities.

Mr Shanebrook had first hand experience in the manufacture of Kodak film with 35 years at the Eastman Kodak company before retiring in 2003. The book draws on his personal experience plus the expertise of some ninety others including Kodak retirees, current Kodak experts, and others in the film industry. In preparing the book he had full access to Kodak Park in Rochester and the people responsible for manufacturing this most famous line of photographic films.
