SHANNON PERRY – Discovering Colour Pictures from WWII

Colour photos were very limited until the late 1940s. Imagine “discovering” 1000s of colour images from WWII that were transferred to Library and Archives Canada in 2008 from the National Defence Image Library! Shannon’s presentation is about that “discovery.” Although primarily of a public relations nature, the collection is a fascinating study of the early commercial colour technology as it was tested in the studio and in the field by combat photographers such as Ken Bell.

Another marvellous newsletter from editor Bob Lansdale. Thirteen pages of news and information for the collector and photography enthusiast. News on our speaker this month and her revelation of COLOUR photographs from the battles of World War 2 (November 11 is remembrance day here in Canada). More on the mystery camera discussed last month and the Flammang Camera Co. Dennis Cannon visiting from BC watches the return of salmon in Toronto’s Humber river and visits the Aeronautical Museum in Hamilton. A photo essay on the recent PhotoHistory symposium at GEH in Rochester. In closing this issue, Bob Lansdale snuck in a note reminding us that our society has had a presence on the Web for 15 years.

PhotoHistory is held every two years at George Eastman House in Rochester and hosted by “The Photographic Historical Society”, a small group of very dedicated individuals in the city made famous by Kodak.

International Leica History Symposium 2011

PITTSBURG PA, October 14 – 16, 2011. The Leica Historical Society of America is hosting the International Leica History Symposium at the Holiday Inn, Pittsburg (at University Center). Friday evening there is a reception and presentation by Leica photographer Ronald Hill. The next day, Saturday,  features a series of presentations on  Leica history and design. Sunday wraps up  with the  traditional trade show. Editor Lansdale has pulled together a 14 page number covering many of the fall events, coverage of our first Boot Sale, 94 year old member Harry Joy’s lovely B&W exhibit in Toronto, A mystery camera query by the Sallows Gallery in Goderich – this camera measures 13.5 x 8.5 x 11.5 inches and takes an 8 x 10 inch plate, The WCPHA emblem redeemed – why the old timers hid under their cloth at times, and some more paper memorabilia thanks to Lindsay Lambert.

You know fall is arriving when the photo shows start up again and editor Bob Lansdale pulls his second issue of the journal together. This year he offers three major stories to stir your imagination.

Lorne Shields writes about his historically important image of velocipedes and why it is so interesting to both photo and bicycle collectors. Irwin Reichstein in Ottawa provides a very detailed look at the Saronys, a famous family of 19th century photographers. John Marriage in England offers an extensive insight into the research needed to identify the photograph of an unusual bridge – including help from some PHSC members. All this and the usual columns “Toronto notes”, and “Browsing Through Our Exchanges”.
