Charles Marville: Photographer of Paris

Charles Marville

Charles Marville

Thanks to member John Bock, a familiar face at the Photographica Fairs, for noting an interesting article by Chuck Delaney on the salt paper and albumen prints of Paris by Marville before some city streets and neighbourhoods were torn up and replaced.

The article John sent me is restricted but you can see nearly two dozen of Marville’s prints here at the National Gallery of Art in Ottawa. The exhibition has since moved on to the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) which is the source of the show discussed by Delaney in his article. There is a good write-up here in the NY Times. You can see the exhibition at the MOMA if you happen to visit New York this spring.

Butterflies and Buffalo Camera

B+B_Camera_001-smStan White always sends me an interesting tidbit.

In this case, it is a doozy! This mammoth camera will be used to capture portraits of some fifty distinct cultures in the states.

The camera’s purpose is captured by this brief quote: “An enigma in today’s digital world, the camera’s classic construction and unprecedented 6-foot film negatives are a tribute to a fading era in photography as we approach the 200th anniversary of the camera.

A Steady Lens – pioneer photographer Mary Spencer

A Steady Lens author

A Steady Lens
by Sherril Foster

Toronto, February 28, 2014. Yesterday I received a courteous note from author Sherril Foster. Ms Foster wrote to the website after learning of the death of Gerry Loban who she wished to thank for his assistance with her research of BC photographer Mary Spencer.

Talking about Mary Spencer, Sherril states:
She ended up in BC and took the famous shots of train robber Bill Miner in 1906.  I did find out lots more about her and the result is my book; A Steady Lens, The True Story of Pioneer Photographer, Mary Spencer.
“She actually started her career in Ontario and apprenticed under a photographer in Port Colborne in the mid 1890s, Silas Hayes.
“Thanks again for your help. It really was a lot of fun researching and everyone I contacted was so helpful. I think the book is doing quite well”.

The book is available on Amazon.
