Toronto. Member Felix Russo advises us that his latest issue of PhotoEd magazine – Spring/Summer 2015 is now on sale in stores and online. This issue features the work of a half dozen photographers as it explains the art of narrative image-making.
The magazines are an excellent tool for teaching the art of photography to students and enthusiastic amateurs wishing to improve their craft.

Toronto. Member Felix Russo is the owner/editor of PhotoED magazine, an education oriented publication based here in Toronto. Felix asks for student submissions for the Fall 2015 edition of the magazine.
Felix says, “Our Fall 2015 issue is a survey of colleges, universities, and professional schools of photography, and a showcase for emerging talent, A.K.A. Ones to watch. Deadline for submissions Monday June 22, 2015. See our website for details.”.

Western Canada Photographic Historical Association
Vancouver. Tom Parkinson from our sister organization on the west coast recently sent out the WCPHA Newsletter for June 2015. The Collector column has a multi page discussion of the Iloca Cameras – made in Hamburg Germany during the 1940s and 50s. The cameras made by this company included some models with the more familiar brands to North Americans: Realist, Graflex, Tower, Photrix, and Argus.
The Secretary’s message mentions a Knowledge Network video on Polaroid and that McKeown’s is nearing completion of the latest version of their definitive Camera Price Guide – a massive 4000 to 5000 letter size pages in four volumes! Knowledge Network is a private broadcaster in BC – much like TVO here and a personal favourite of mine during the late weekend hours in the east.
While much of the newsletter discusses business items specific to the WCPHA, the article on the Iloca company makes it a worthwhile read, Click here or on the Association icon at left and enjoy!

Toronto. About 35 years ago, I used my Leica to take a few shots of my girls during school concerts. I was the odd man out – few parents had a camera, and those who did had cheap little box cameras with a built-in flash that did little if anything to capture the antics of the children on stage.
Last night as I videoed a grandchild with my digital still camera, it seemed everyone had a camera – iPads, iPhones, point and shoots, the audience was awash in cameras. A few had huge DSLRs and some even had video cameras – three on tripods. Continue reading
Globe ROB – The internet of Things
Toronto. We are hearing more and more about appliances, cars, HVAC, alarms. door locks, phones, and watches, etc. all being interconnected via the internet.
For sometime now all these devices have used on board computers (we are very familiar with digital cameras, of course).
The Globe in its Report on Business (ROB) announces the Internet of Things with a bit of humour showing how such a connection could restrain an over-weight gentleman from indulging…
PHSC Spring 2015 Fair
Toronto. Did you miss the PHSC fair Sunday? It was a busy venue offering many collectible and user pieces. Both the main and the overflow parking lots filled up early.
Thanks to videographer Greg Mazur and U of T student and PHSC executive member Oscar Li, a two minute video has just been posted to YouTube. Greg explained that he was using a tiny little experimental video camera so the quality is lacking compared to high end gear he plans to use this fall.

Jamie Day Fleck
NEXT TORONTO MEETING: Wed, June 17th, 2015
We spoke with Jamie back in November 2013 at our Toronto meeting. At the time, Ms Fleck was searching for cameras and preparing her documentary on Kirk. She has since completed her work and we are please to hear her discussion of Photos by Kirk (directed by Jamie Day Fleck) at the coming Toronto meeting.
Jamie Day Fleck was born in Florida, moving to Toronto at an early age. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and started her commercial photography career there, relocating back to Toronto in 2011.
Portraiture was the basis for her photographic exploration, as well as her subjects’ relationships to their environment. This has led her into documentary filmmaking, where she continues to study characters and their stories with her lens. She received her MFA in Documentary Media from Ryerson University in 2014.

Toronto. John Krug of Ottawa needs your help. John runs the web site Photographers of Ontario. At left is a cabinet card by John Best of Oshawa – but it has no definitive date posted, front or back.
John writes, “I’d like to get a message across to [PHSC] members that I am looking for dated & imprinted cabinet cards with realistically provable dates (No 1888 cards with a date written in ballpoint, or a photo dated 1870 by relatives when the guy [pictured] died 10 years before).
“My next site update is scheduled for June 30 and I would like to get as many contributions before then so they can be evaluated and inputted.
