Toronto. Member Felix Russo presented his talk on 3D photography to a delighted audience at the monthly PHSC meeting in Toronto. Felix drew upon a number of his PhotoEd magazine specials on 3D plus some old traditional images collected by members. All example images are converted to anaglyph-style stereos making it easy to view them in colour and monochrome using easily available glasses with cellophane lenses of red (left) and blue (right).

Felix showed many inexpensive ways to create digital stereo such as split prisms or mirrors, sliding beams for single cameras, or even the cha-cha technique of taking two shots, one with weight on the right foot and a second with weight on the left foot. The technique is demonstrated here by Robert Lansdale using a Nikon DSLR. An interesting website is that of Julian Beever. Beever uses 3D concepts to fool the eye into seeing his sidewalk chalk drawings as 3D images. Take a look!  Continue reading →

Weegee: Murder is My Business

Arthur Fellig was a New York City photographer famous for his flash shots of crime scenes and his often arrival at a crime scene before the authorities (hence his nickname of Weegee, a phonetic version of Ouija Board. James Adams of the Globe and Mail wrote an Arts article on Friday, October 16, 2015 on this unique photographer and author.

While his work was passed off as far less than the quality images of Walker Evans or Edward Steichen, they have gained stature over time, showing the moody, noir underbelly of NYC of the 1930s and 40s.

The Ryerson Image Centre in downtown Toronto is featuring Fellig’s images through to December 13, 2015. Drop in and see Fellig’s strong images taken with a single flash and a 4×5 Speed Graphic.

Never modest, Weegee stamped the back of his prints with the logo “Credit Photo  by Weegee the Famous” and dropped them off at the many New York City newspapers of the day.

Member Felix Russo is  publisher and editor of PhotoEd Magazine (www.photoed.ca). This Wednesday he will present an overview of 3-D photography.

Hardware and software solutions will be demonstrated.

Instructions will be given on how to make your own 3-D images with any digital camera. Red/cyan stereo glasses will be provided.

It’s a 3-D world, come and learn how to incorporate 3-D into your 2-D photography.

Newsletter 15-5

PHSC-E-Mail-V15-5-33Toronto. Editor DavidBridge has put together another colourful and entertaining edition of the PHSC Newsletter which went out last night to our distribution lists.

Next week’s speaker at the Toronto meeting, Mr Ralph Beaumont, is introduced. Ralph will speak on his new book, Heckman’s Canadian Pacific which is based on the many photographic prints and negatives resident in the CPR archives. NOTE: Ralph Beaumont will be our speaker early in 2016. This Wednesday’s speaker is the popular editor of PhotoEd magazine, Mr Felix Russo. We are sorry if any confusion has arisen. 

We review last month’s interesting presentation by member Scott Rickard of the Chilkoot trail from Skagway to Dawson City, famous as a Royal Mail route and the preferred path from an Alaskan port to the famous Klondike gold fields in the Yukon.

Our current journal, coming fairs and auction all receive notice. There is a an obituary for PHSC member and well known photographer 98 year old Harry Joy. The Medium and Her Message

My youngest daughter and her husband both took their Master’s at U of T. I still receive the UofT Magazine. In the Autumn 2015 issue, the short article below appeared. Click on it for  easier reading.

Harry Joy Visitation Details and Obituary

Toronto. Visitation for the late Harry Joy will take place Sunday, October 25th at the  Turner and Porter home, Windermere and Bloor West in Bloor West Village. Hours of visitation will be 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm.

Mr Joy was cremated this week and his family plan to bury his ashes next June on his birthday. Mr Joy was pre-deceased by his wife and his younger brother, John Joy, the well-known artist.

Toronto. We are sad to report that photographer Harry Joy passed away yesterday at 8 am. Harry was a long time member of the PHSC and resident of Etobicoke. He was born in Winnipeg back in 1917 and at the age of two  moved to Toronto along with his family.

Harry is well known for his photographs of the downtown area and especially the Kensington Market area of the 1960s. Over the years, his studio worked with the Toronto Star as well as with many local politicians.

His most recent exhibition was held last January at the St Lawrence Market gallery along with the photos of photographers Doug Hemmy and Andy Brooks. A 97 year old Harry attended the opening event.

Harry’s black and white photographs are featured in a photo essay prepared for the Photographic Canadiana, issue 40-3, by editor Robert Lansdale. Textual material was provided by Harry’s son-in-law, Wayne Gilbert, who currently holds the membership position in our society.
