Graham Wesley Garrett – Daguerreotype Researcher

GRAHAM-GARRETTToronto, July 27, 2014. Photographic Canadiana editor, Bob Lansdale, relays this sad message:

“Noted historian Graham Garrett passed away last July 27, 2014 in his 80th year. This sad loss has just been drawn to our attention. Graham contributed several well researched articles on early Canadian photography to our Photographic Canadiana journal and helped immensely in preparing the article on Eli Palmer – Toronto Photographer.

“His greatest contribution to the history of Canadian photography is the Biographical Index of Daguerreotypists in Canada 1839-1871 which was made available on disc with thousands of entries.

“Survived by his loving wife Hoda (nee Nasri). Remembered fondly by brothers Bernard and Elton, sister-in-law Mona, brothers-in-law Rafik and Hani, many nieces and nephews and his good friend Anna.”

You can read the formal obituary notice, as published last summer in the Toronto Star newspaper, here on the Legacy website.

Chas Abel Photo Service “Photo Finish”

Charlie Abel

Charlie Abel

Toronto, November 27, 2014. Thanks to PHSC member George Dunbar who spotted this obituary for a local legend. Charles Abel owned a Toronto  photo finishing company when I was a kid. His trademark was a horse race with a “photo finish”.  His service was widely used in Ontario.

The Chas Abel billboard on the Gardener was seen daily by thousands and thousands of people. His son was a member of our society some years back. Following is the Obituary which appeared in the Toronto Star  on November 27, 2014.

Vancouver. Our sister organization on the west coast is busy getting ready for their camera show tomorrow. The show was announced in their November newsletter which is attached here.

The newsletter offers  two articles along with some association information: First is The Making of Albumenized Paper, a paper treatment used in the later 1800s to prepare paper for photographic emulsion. A second article for camera collectors discusses the famous Rollei lookalike TLR, the Minolta Autocord ( you do know that Minolta folded into Konica which was absorbed by Sony and lives on today as Sony’s main DSLR line).

Check out the Scientific Auction for cameras and lenses

Toronto. From time to time Skinner in Boston and Marlborough MA send me an email about up and coming auctions. Saturday (November 1, 2014) there is an auction covering Clocks, Watches, and Scientific Instruments. Included in this listing are cameras and lenses which are grouped with Scientific Instruments. There are a few Leica/Leitz items that seem a bit the worse for wear and priced accordingly.

In any case, have look at Skinner’s lovely online catalogues.
