Toronto photographer Gary Blakeley has spent thirty years as a graphic designer for arts, academic, and business communications. He has lengthy expertise in print production, computer graphics, and information technology. Running through his photography are themes of architecture, travel, and militaria.

Bob Lansdale’s latest newsletter announces our first summer boot sale. We review Andrew Stawicki’s June talk on his PhotoSensitive organization. An article “Early Photo History in London” reviews a cache of Chromotypes that surfaced in this southern Ontario city. We report on some of “Professor” Lambert’s paper memorabilia. Popular speaker Lorne Shields had two bicycle articles published recently. PhotoHistory XV is coming this fall to GEH in Rochester, the home of George Eastman and Kodak. Andrew Stawicki was introduced by fellow photographer and friend Wayne Gilbert. Andrew began his photographic career in his native Poland. In 1982 he brought his family to Canada, where he joined the staff of the Toronto Star. His photographs have appeared in various “A Day In The Life Of…”, books on Canada, Japan, USA, Spain and the old Soviet Union. He has won many awards for his photographic work including a gold medal in the Society of Newspaper Design Awards and in the CAPIC Awards. He was the National Newspaper Award (Features category) winner in 1993 and 1999. His 10-year photographic study of the Mennonites was published in his book, “A People Apart” in 1995. Continue reading
A beautiful online history of the famous Leica Camera from inception to 2011 put together by Leica photographer and teacher Thorsten Overgaard of Denmark. Each month I browse our site statistics preparing a report for our executive. One of the pleasures of that task is tracing back random links to our site. This month such a chance trace took me back eventually to this charming post by Thorsten Overgaard. His Leica history currently covers three web pages beginning with Oskar Barnack and his earliest (pre Great War) experiments to create a miniature camera back in the days of large view and roll film cameras right up to this year when Leica Camera announced the M9-P, a variation on its very successful full frame digital M9 model. Bob Lansdale’s latest newsletter for our 2011-2 membership year introduces Andrew Stawicki, our June speaker, reviews the fascinating talk Amanda Rataj gave last month on her experiences as an albumen print maker. This edition offers photo essays from our recent Spring Fair, A discussion about tissue overlays on the old albumen carded prints, a couple of queries for information and help from BC, one from Fort Nelson and the other from Summerland. The 19th WestLicht camera auction held on the 28th of May and featuring 721 lots has broken many records worldwide: The highlight was lot number 1 with an estimated price of between 350.000 to 450.000 Euro. After a tough bidder battle starting at 200.000 Euro, lasting for 20 minutes, the highlight of the auction, the extremely rare Leica of the 0-series from 1923, sold for a staggering 1.320.000 Euro (USD 1.900.000) including premium. The bidder, a private collector from Asia, is with this buy the new owner of the most expensive camera ever sold worldwide. Toronto, ON May 27, 2011. Gary Blakeley sent me a link to a Toronto Star article today about his new app ZeitagTO. This is a free app for Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. ZeitagTO has a city map and some 500 historic pictures from the City of Toronto Archives. If you have an iPhone/iPad/Touch (and who doesn’t?) take a look at our city in the rear view mirror of our old photographers. Gary will be expanding the file of images for Toronto, GTA, and other cities. And yes, he plans an Android version too…
