Toronto. This newsletter announces our coming Trunk Sale this Sunday. Editor David Bridge and  journal editor Bob Lansdale have gone out of their way to make this another exciting issue for all who collect and enjoy photographic equipment and images.

Louse Freyburger researched interesting links. The 1920s image of Penn Station in NYC by Joseph Ruzicka comes from one of those links (for CCNY).

Tom Bochsler announced his half century of negatives and files have been donated to the Hamilton Public Library while the Toronto Star has chosen to donate its entire archive of negatives and files to the Toronto Public Libraries where the images are being digitized and placed online for all to view. Toronto. Editor David Bridge has put together another exciting newsletter! Issue 14-2 is a delight to the eyes with its photo essays. Click on the icon at left.

On the front page this month’s speaker, inspirational photographer Barry Shainbaum, along with an announcement of this summer’s 4th annual trunk sale.

A trio of photo essays show the society’s 40th annual meeting at Campbell House, our spring fair this year, and a look at early fairs. The CONTACT exhibit we set up at Campbell House “Double the Pleasure, Triple the Fun” is reviewed.

An interesting article by John Marriage on the Samocaflex is in response the one shown in the latest Photographic Canadiana. 40-1.

We note the latest Photographic Canadiana, and our first book by the PHSC Press, This issue ends with the 16th Photohistory symposium in Rochester this fall, a calendar of events, a compilation of interesting photo links, current events, and want ads. Toronto. In this morning’s Globe and Mail, columnist Marina Strauss reports on the evolution of our camera stores (Black’s, Henry’s) as camera phones eat up the sales of the traditional point and shoot digital cameras. She calls this photography – images taken with a smart phone and uploaded rather than printed – as phoneography. The transition away from traditional point and shoot cameras is supported by various sites that track sales. Strauss notes that big communications companies now own outlets like Black’s (Telis) and The Source (Bell), stores which become venues for their cell phones.

A few weeks back on May 8th, I did a post about the cartoon character Betty who asks her husband Bub about cameras. Bub says they look “exactly like a phone”.

The icon to the left shows my iPod Touch which includes a 5mp camera. It goes everywhere with me unlike my Sony NEX 6. I owned three digital cameras, including two Nikon Coolpix models, before I managed to exceed that level of detail. I broke through with a top of the line Sony F828 complete with an 8mp sensor!

Barry Shainbaum is a gifted photographer, author, radio show host, professional speaker, musician and active community volunteer. Barry will speak on how photography, and especially his project to photograph inspirational personalities and world leaders, helped him to overcome some extremely serious challenges that he faced during his early years.

The result of this project is his book Hope and Heroes which contains many excellent portraits that he captured around the world of such exceptional people as Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelo, Jane Goodall, Billy Graham, Uri Geller, Art Linkletter, Martin Sheen and Shimon Peres among  others.

This is the closing of our stereoscopic display at Campbell House. The display celebrated our 40th anniversary and CONTACT month in Toronto.

Campbell House Museum in Toronto is located downtown at the north-west corner of Queen Street west and University Avenue. Easy access via bus and subway.
