layar – making newspapers interactive

layar-logo.a2c90edab9ddToronto, September 20, 2013. On Friday, Carol looked up from the Toronto Star and said, “What’s this mean”?  pointing to a funny little cell phone icon next to a photo.  “It must let you see more,” I said. Turning to the  front section of the Star, I found an explanation. Continue reading

Newsletter 13-4

Fall is here this week and we started off our fall season with an auction last Sunday, to be followed by a very special speaker this Wednesday, and our annual fall fair next month. And this newsletter (which was mailed tonight) is another gem courtesy of our editor David Bridge.

From the left: Our cover of 13-4, Wayne Gilbert at our summer trunk sale, Special show by Tom Bochsler at the coming fall fair, a daguerreotype is discovered, This week's speaker talks about the photographer behind this portrait of an Indian gentleman, the name Kodak is 125 years old, a camera from the net, and a quartet of Ansco Memo half frame cameras from decades ago.

Have you seen our clips – FOUND!

Lightweight_aluminium_frame_4_panel_jumbo_display_board__67230UPDATE: Bob Lansdale is pleased to report the missing clips have been found. Thanks to all who checked!

At the end of the auction on Sunday we lost a bag of clips used to hold the PHSC displays together (you know, the fuzzy boards like at the left, touting the fair and our next Toronto meeting).

Bob Lansdale was taking the display apart at the end of the auction, and we think someone may have put the bag of clips in his/her box of stuff by accident. Please check it out and drop me or Bob a note at info@phsc.ca. Thanks folks.

Some months back I pulled John Krug’s “Photographers of Ontario” link because I thought his site was closed. Not so. The other day John emailed me that his site was up and well after being down briefly during some work on it. Continue reading

TORONTO, ON, September 2, 2013. Bob Lansdale sent me this note regarding the MiPHS show next month. The folks in Michigan have long been exchange members and contact for our editor on stories and leads.

In the summer of 1986, I went with Bill Belier (a past president of PHSC) and Pat Agnew (a past editor of the PC) to visit the Michigan show. It was a great show with many Leitz items including a 5cm Elmar enlarging lens in excellent condition which I bought. If you have time next month drop in. The admission is just six dollars – five if you print a copy of the attached ticket. Enjoy!

W. J Moore Panorama Photographs

Moore-portrait-228x300Toronto, August 12, 2013. I am a fan of BC’s public television. Occasionally the Vancouver station (Knowledge Network) shows a brief story featuring a Vancouver area panorama by W J Moore. If your TV able etc company doesn’t carry Knowledge Network, you can easily view to station on the internet.

Vancouver Archives recently featured an article on Moore. Their link includes a connection to Flickr! and a series of Moore’s photographs. A century ago Moore bought a Kodak Cirkut #8 camera which he used in the first 15 years of his business.

Moore was born in Quebec in 1887 along the Ontario border just north of Ottawa. He learned the craft of photography in Alberta working for his brother-in-law Byron Harmon in Banff before moving on to Vancouver in 1912 and a professional career as a photographer in our great west coast city.
