Our GTCCC (Greater Toronto Council of Camera Clubs) representative Felix Russo announced that the GTCCC is hosting an all day seminar at Centennial College on Carlaw Avenue in the east end of Toronto. The day is devoted to improving our skills in using the camera (rather than collecting the instrument). For details you can visit the GTCCC page or contact Harvey Rogers.
Well, our new email editor, David Bridge, is trying his wings under the firm guidance of journal editor Lansdale. David has done a remarkable job with this eleven page extravaganza!

James Trautman

James Trautman was born and grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey not far from the Newark Airport. He last spoke to us back on January 20, 2010. At that time he talked about the golden age of the Pan American Clippers based on his book on the famous flying boats (now in its second printing and widely distributed) This time he talks about the famous Turofsky brothers who covered the sports scene and day to day life in Toronto in much of the first half of the last century mostly from the Alexandra Studio that Lou bought and renamed. ANNUAL SHOW AND TELL
It’s time again for our very popular Show & Tell evening. Members bring all sorts of unusual items for show and possible identification. If you have an item, please let Scott Rickard know so he can add you to the list! He can be reached at: srickard@persona.ca As usual, before the Show & Tell session, we will have our traditional gift exchange (bring a gift of about $15 of interest to a member to participate) and during the evening we will have another excellent silent auction, so bring some change.

Baltimore MD. November 2012. The Daguerreian Society held its annual symposium in Baltimore this year. A number of Canadian enthusiasts where in attendance including Mike Robinson of AMC and our own Bob Wilson and Bob Lansdale. As in past years Bob Lansdale has done duty as the official photographer of the Daguerreian Society. His photo essay is now on line at Shutterfly. We have something slightly different this time. The newsletter is a joint effort between journal editor Bob Lansdale and co-editor David Bridge. David is in the process of taking over the editorial duties for this pdf newsletter.

This month, the November speaker is announced and the video shown in October are reviewed. The fall fair report and the Boris Spremo exhibit at the fall fair are covered. We have two book reviews. The first is on Josef Sudek by Maia Sutnik of the AGO and coincides with that institution’s exhibit of Sutnik’s work. The second is a book about Early Paper Stereoviews by the late John Cameron and Janice Schimmelman of MiPHS. There is a photo essay of the Daguerrien Seminar held in Baltimore earlier this month, plus a discussion of another mystery item – an unusual camera. The 13 page extravaganza wraps up with the usual columns.
An interesting exhibit on Walter Teague was held earlier this year at the Madisonian Museum of Industrial Design in Waitsfield, Vermont. You can see a brief recap by Rick Soloway here that mentions our Photographic Canadiana issue 32-3 which featured a Teague article by Rick and Ralph London on the beautiful Kodak cameras designed by Mr Teague.

Jon lives with his partner Joanne in Toronto and shoots film and creates hand-made photographs using historical and alternative processes. He says “the tangibility of the silver and iron processes is a tactile counterbalance to the fleeting ephemera of the digital world. I love the anticipation of waiting to see what will come out of the fix, or seeing a platinum print appear like magic in the developer. In my alternative process printing, I work primarily with platinum and palladium, argyrotypes, kallitypes and cyanotypes. I am still perfecting my technique, but learning more every day“.
PHSC member Gary Perry has announced his fall Camerama show. The show will be held November 25th, 2012 from 10am to 3pm at the Toronto Don Valley Hotel at Eglinton and the DVP. Entrance is off Wynford Drive. Parking is free in any of the metered spots above ground or in the underground on Level H. You can contact the Hotel for directions or Gary for table reservations etc.
