Toronto. Laura sent me this announcement regarding a presentation she is offering at the Arts and Letters club, third floor on June 19, 2015. She has been a member of the PHSC over the years. At one time she operated the Baldwin Street Gallery. Laura has spoken to members at our monthly meeting at least twice to my recollection. Drop in at the downtown Arts and Letters club and enjoy the opportunity to see her and the late John Phillips’ photographs and video of the 1960s civil rights movement in the States.

Laura writes, “It is a one evening event where I will be showing some of the PPC pictures. Here is the info: event at the Arts & Letters Club (address below) on June 19th. It is a private club, so you need to ring the bell for entry. You are most welcome to come. I expect that you will enjoy the evening. And all PHSC members, families and friends are invited too.”

Summer Leigh at Casa Loma

Summer-Leigh-at-Casa-Loma-smToronto. Our January speaker photographer Summer Leigh dropped me a short note yesterday to say her work will be exhibited at Casa Loma in Toronto all next month. A reception will be held July 2nd.

Members will recall Summer gave a delightful talk last January on her approach to the watercolour works of Elizabeth Simcoe and photographs of William James Sr. A review of her talk appeared in the 14-9 Newsletter pp2-3.

Derek Dalton 1936 – 2015

DERECK-DALTON-obit-2-DSC_0399-smToronto. Derek Dalton, a fixture in the Toronto Postcard scene for many years died on June 3, 2015. Derek had participated in our camera fairs and image shows and was a member of the PHSC as late as last year. The following obituary is paraphrased and posted from the Toronto Star:

DALTON, Derek Anthony William – June 23, 1936 Croydon, England – June 3, 2015.

Derek died peacefully with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Sandra for 53 years. Father of Alison Dalton-Osmond, John Dalton and his wife Cris, beloved grandpa of Sarah Osmond. Derek was predeceased by his daughter Janet Dalton, who passed away suddenly April 28, 2014. Bye Bye Eddie

Blacks-Is-Photography-smToronto. How sad. It was announced today that Black’s has folded and will close the last 50+ stores in early August. Heavens, Black’s is older than me. I spent many a lunch hour visiting the local Black’s to have my colour photographs processed and printed.

The once bustling family business sold non-photographic items initially. A growth in cameras spawned the chain’s focus on developing and printing including its innovative 4 x 6 inch colour print. In 1985 the family sold out to Scott’s Hospitality who in turn sold the chain to Fuji Photo Film Canada less a decade later in 1993. In 2009 the much reduced chain was sold once again, this time to Telus after their cell phone competition, Bell Mobility, bought the Source chain. Continue reading →

Telling Stories

telling-stories-smToronto. Member Felix Russo advises us that his latest issue of PhotoEd magazine – Spring/Summer 2015 is now on sale in stores and online. This issue features the work of a half dozen photographers as it explains the art of narrative image-making.

The magazines are an excellent tool for teaching the art of photography to students and enthusiastic amateurs wishing to improve their craft.

Toronto. Member Felix Russo is the owner/editor of PhotoED magazine, an education oriented publication based here in Toronto. Felix asks for student submissions for the Fall 2015 edition of the magazine.

Felix says, “Our Fall 2015 issue is a survey of colleges, universities, and professional schools of photography, and a showcase for emerging talent, A.K.A. Ones to watch. Deadline for submissions Monday June 22, 2015. See our website for details.”.

Vancouver. Tom Parkinson from our sister organization on the west coast recently sent out the WCPHA Newsletter for June 2015. The Collector column has a multi page discussion of the Iloca Cameras –  made in Hamburg Germany during the 1940s and 50s. The cameras made by this company included some models with the more familiar brands to North Americans: Realist, Graflex, Tower, Photrix, and Argus.

The Secretary’s message mentions a Knowledge Network video on Polaroid and that McKeown’s is nearing completion of the latest version of their definitive Camera Price Guide – a massive 4000 to 5000 letter size pages in four volumes! Knowledge Network is a private broadcaster in BC – much like TVO here and a personal favourite of mine during the late weekend hours in the east.

While much of the newsletter discusses business items specific to the WCPHA, the article on the Iloca company makes it a worthwhile read, Click here or on the Association icon at left and enjoy!

Cameras everywhere

Toronto. About 35 years ago, I used my Leica to take a few shots of my girls during school concerts. I was the odd man out – few parents had a camera, and those who did had cheap little box cameras with a built-in flash that did little if anything to capture the antics of the children on stage.

Last night as I videoed a grandchild with my digital still camera, it seemed everyone had a camera – iPads, iPhones, point and shoots, the audience was awash in cameras. A few  had huge DSLRs and some even had video cameras – three on tripods. Continue reading →

For sometime now all these devices have used on board computers (we are very familiar with digital cameras, of course).
