Toronto. The latest issue of Photographic Canadiana is set to be printed shortly. Editor Lansdale has created an exciting issue to wrap up the current 2012/3 season. A milestone event is the publication of part one of the thesis from our first Thesis Award award winner sol (not Sol) Legault who is finishing the Ryerson University MA program in photographic preservation and collections management this spring.

Legault’s thesis, MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE: Exhibiting Erotic Stanhopes
is the main article in this issue. Invented in 1857 by Rene Dagron, the Stanhope is a micrographic transparency affixed to a special viewer which is imbedded in various common day items like cane handles, rings, pens, jewellery, etc. The tiny collodion photograph was invented by John Dancer a few years earlier. Dancer used a microscope to both make and view the tiny image whereas Dagron produced these marvellous tiny pictures for use by the general public.
