Editor Lansdale starts this issue with a synopsis of the PHSC activities for this fall. We celebrate the Gallery show “Memorable Moments” showing member Harry Joy’s 1950s and 60s B&W photographs of Kensington Market and other Toronto neighbourhoods. Stephen Bulger Gallery is proud to remember Ruth Orkin and the 60th Anniversary of her famous “American Girl in Italy” photograph. Lorne Shields was surprised at the NSA meeting this summer where his article “Early Cycling in Stereos” won the 2011 NSA “Best Stereo World Article” award. “Professor” Lindsay Lambert entertains readers with paper memorabilia. Details are provided on the big PhotoHistory symposium coming this October across the lake in Rochester. And there are the regular coming events, want ads and more.

Harry Joy Photos at Miles Nadal Gallery

Canada's Game 1960sTORONTO August 1, 2011. Harry Joy at 90+ is one of PHSC’s oldest members. His photographs of Kensington Market and other Toronto neighbourhoods in the 1950s and 60s are on display from August 1 to September 7, 2011 at the Miles Nadal Gallery in the Jacobs Lounge. The Miles Nadal JCC is at 750 Spadina (corner of Bloor). The gallery is open 9 to 9 on weekdays and 9 to 7 on weekends. Easy access via the TTC Subway.

Tom Bochsler on Radio this Saturday, August 6th

The Art of Industry

You may know Tom from the photographic industry, or his visits to our meetings. This Saturday (August 6th) at 11 am Tom will be interviewed on CHML radio Hamilton at am900 by  Host Judy Marsales and Jim Carrier. Judy’s passion, besides operating a very successful Real Estate business, is promoting the City of Hamilton…. and Tom’s book ‘The Art of Industry‘, illustrates some of the history of Hamilton over the past 50+ years. It will be an interesting time. If you are able, please tune in (Tom is an excellent speaker as you may recall from his talk at our meeting back in March 2006).

Bob Lansdale’s latest newsletter announces our first summer boot sale. We review Andrew Stawicki’s June talk on his PhotoSensitive organization. An article “Early Photo History in London” reviews a cache of Chromotypes that surfaced in this southern Ontario city. We report on some of “Professor” Lambert’s paper memorabilia. Popular speaker Lorne Shields had two bicycle articles published recently. PhotoHistory XV is coming this fall to GEH in Rochester, the home of George Eastman and Kodak.  And Editor Lansdale comments on his strategy in capturing Andrew Stawicki’s portrait. Andrew Stawicki: PhotoSensitive

Andrew Stawicki was introduced by fellow photographer and friend Wayne Gilbert. Andrew began his photographic career in his native Poland. In 1982 he brought his family to Canada, where he joined the staff of the Toronto Star. His photographs have appeared in  various “A Day In The Life Of…”, books on Canada, Japan, USA, Spain and the old Soviet Union. He has won many awards for his photographic work including a gold medal in the Society of Newspaper Design Awards and in the CAPIC Awards. He was the National Newspaper Award (Features category) winner in 1993 and 1999. His 10-year photographic study of the Mennonites was published in his book, “A People Apart” in 1995.
