Toronto, January 15, 2014. We are saddened to report the death of Gerald Loban who served 37 years on the PHSC Executive Committee. Gerry joined in 1977 as member number 0150. He and wife Pauline were Co-Chairmen of the 10th Photographica Fair of 1984.

After the fair, Gerry became the PHSC Librarian on the 1985-87 executive, a position he held until 2013. He often had a table at the PHSC fairs and gave a number of lecture presentations to members of the Society including: Julia Margaret Cameron’s Photographs, A History of Portraiture, Old Time Photo Studio, and The Leica. He was to be our featured speaker for February 2014 on The Minox Camera. Continue reading →

Toronto, December 18, 2013. For the past few years we have used the annual December meeting to conduct a small silent auction. This year was no exception.

As the Show and Tell presentations progress, members quietly viewed and updated their bids.

At the end of the evening the winning bids were announced and members went home with a few new items for their collection and the PHSC had a few more dollars in its treasury!

Toronto, December 18, 2013. Our annual Christmas gift exchange was held tonight after the Show and Tell session.

As usual for many years Mark Singer provided his tiny Christmas tree as a symbol. The tree this year is a new model replacing the original version which served us for many years.

Toronto December 18, 2013. A major element of the PHSC’s success is its publication Photographic Canadiana. What makes this journal significant is its many articles with a Canadian content. Often these articles show the fine hand of editor Bob Lansdale in their in-depth analysis and careful research.

Bob’s efforts on behalf of the Rex Frost portion of our recent auction including his excellent article in issue 39-3 of Photographic Canadiana is typical of his enthusiasm and diligence. Shown here Bob is presented with two of the Frost originals. Congratulations editor Lansdale!

Toronto, December 18, 2013. In a surprise announcement at the annual show and tell meeting past executive member Ed Warner was recognized for his long time contribution to the PHSC. Ed spent many years as PHSC rep at the postcard show, auctioneer, vice president, president, and past president.

Living in Oshawa, Ed made many trips into Toronto on behalf of the PHSC. Well deserved Ed!

Joe A. Bailey 1929 – 2013

Rochester: December 22, 2013. We sadly report the passing of Dr Bailey. I met Joe in May of 1996 when he spoke with us at a Toronto meeting on “Little Known Things about Unknown People – the history of the 35 mm camera in the USA“.

He wrote many books and articles on his favourite topics. Dr. Bailey was a long time employee of Eastman Kodak and a member of The Photographic Historical Society in Rochester, where he was their newsletter editor for many years.

TINTYPES IN THE ROCKIES: Blake Chorley. 

Blake Chorley bought an old 11×14 view camera and decided to go out to the Rockies and photograph like the 1850s wet plate photographers once did, lugging his supplies, and darkroom along with him. Come and hear his experiences and challenges – and see his camera and some super large size outdoor tintypes as well! Those of you who made it to our December meeting had a preview since Blake brought two of his big tintypes to the Show and Tell last month.

The Ubiquitous Camera

The-ubiquitous-camera-smToronto, December 1, 2013. Got your Christmas shopping done yet? Another season is roaring down the rails!

George Dunbar sent this picture along showing viewers at a race in England, possibly the Ascot this year. What is remarkable, besides the traditional hats, are the number of cameras displayed.

Digital cameras make the art seem effortless these days. In fact cameras are becoming like digital clocks on appliances – they are everywhere. In shopping around for bathroom fixtures and tiles, I noticed only ONE of dozens of stores used the sign “No Cameras” which was so commonplace a few years ago.
