John T Bock September 2018

John Bock at a PHSC fair

Toronto. I received a sad note today from Hans Bock to tell us his father had passed away last month. John first joined the PHSC in 1987 and has been a perennial table holder at our fairs. I will miss the brief chats we had about Zeiss, Exakta, and the other German cameras he enjoyed. John often had miniature CCD cameras as well from his business north-west of the city, a few of which ended up in my house.

His son Hans writes, “Hi Sonja [our Newsletter editor] and those at the PHSC,

“I just wanted to inform you of the passing of John Bock last month.  It was an unexpected death leaving both his wife, Ingrid, myself and the extended family.  We’ve been sorting out much since his passing and unfortunately not able to send this earlier.”

Hans continues, “It’s with sadness that we note the passing of John Bock this past September.  John was a long time PHSC member and avid collector of German cameras from Zeiss, Voightlander and others.

“Having been a press photographer in Germany during his twenties, John seeked out the adventures of immigrating to Canada and starting a new life.  Over the years John remained active in the photographic industry working for Eddie Blacks,  running his own camera repair shop in downtown Toronto and then working for Carl Zeiss Canada for over twenty years.

“In the mid-eighties, John stepped out into a different field of industrial video imaging when CCD sensors were just coming to market.  Even with this new venture, John never stopped collecting, trading and repairing classic cameras for others.  His knowledge and passion for photography and German cameras was clearly evident in his interactions with other collectors.”

sayonara DSLR – II

the age of the mirrorless
comparing Nikon Z7 and D850

Toronto. Last month, I suggested the DSLR as a professional tool would disappear replaced by high end mirrorless cameras. And just recently, my opinion was strengthened by a review of two Nikon’s on Steve’s Digicams site.

The review, by Josh LeBlanc, on September 29th compares the new Nikon Z7 mirrorless with the work horse Nikon D850. LeBlanc does suggest that the mirrorless Canon designs have better ergonomics than either Nikon or Sony designs. And while all three have excellent build quality, the weatherproofing of the Nikon gets the nod.

Two big pluses in LeBlanc’s opinion of Nikon’s mirrorless design are its weight – 1/3 lighter; and flexibility – any Nikon full frame lenses work on the N7!

Microcosms Macrocosms

From Bonsai by Yamamoto Masao
At Stephen Bulger Gallery

Toronto. The works of photographer Yamamoto Masao will be featured in the Stephen Bulger Gallery October 20th to November 17th, 2018 with the opening reception on Saturday, October 20th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. The editorial on the exhibit is as follows:

“Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present ‘Microcosms Macrocosms‘, the first Canadian exhibition of work by the acclaimed artist Yamamoto Masao.

“Yamamoto is renowned for his small hand-worked gelatin silver prints, which he delicately distresses to imbue the object with a degree of patina in order for the photographs to appear from an indeterminant time, encouraging the viewer to engage with photography as a tactile experience. The sensual surfaces of his black and white photographs contain subtle tones that contrast with ephemeral moments he explores in his imagery.

“Yamamoto’s photographs are often compared to Japanese Haiku, short poems that derive their power from simple and direct images drawn from nature.

beginning to see the light …

Diogenes Searches – Robert Ariail

Toronto. A couple of millennials ago, the Greek philosopher Diogenes was said to be searching for an honest man. An all too appropriate pursuit today. American editorial cartoonist Robert Ariail‘s  drawing shown at left is dated February 13th, 2018. The full cartoon shows Diogenes searching for “a man who has never abused a woman”. And what would Ariail think about the Kavanaugh circus of this fall!

Regardless of the circus south of us, in this era of digital photography, Diogenes’s lantern would be very handy to search for users of film technology – and he would succeed as writer Salmaan Farooqui notes in Monday’s Globe, “As millennials take up film photography, darkrooms see a bright future ahead“. The article uses our Downtown Camera store as a basis for the enthusiasm shown.

How timely is our fall fair! We are holding it this coming Sunday, October 14th, 2018. You can find lots of film era gear for the exposure of film, plus studio, darkroom, and more!

It’s worth a visit if you are part of the rebirth of film photography, a digital maven, or just want to add to your photography collection! There are bargains galore on the 14th.

have you read about the father of photography?

The Two Ways of Life – 1857 By Oscar Gustave Rejlander

Toronto. Browsing books on photography in the 70s and 80s you could find photos of someone in England called Oscar Rejlander (1813-1875). He was born in Sweden (hence his name) but lived most of his life in the UK. You can read about him on Wikipedia.

Due to his influence on the work of prominent British photographers and traditional artists of the era, he is known today as the father of photography (whether you ever heard of him or not).

And you can see an exhibit of his works at our National Gallery. The exhibit will run from October 19th, 2018 to February 3rd next year before heading down to the Getty in L.A. The reception is the night before it opens, at 6 to 8 pm the 18th in Ottawa.
