The law is very broad and foggy from what I have seen in the news and blogs. Worse, it is impotent with the offshore spammers who were the very vast majority of those harassing our inboxes before we got decent spam filters.
Margaret Wente, a favourite columnist of mine, in the Globe and Mail, offered a well thought out commentary on CASL a few days ago on July 8, 2014. Click on the Globe’s icon above or here to read her column. Worth the read.
Hopefully the law will be clarified and simplified in the three (or is it two?) years we have to make the changes as a not-for-profit federally registered charitable organization which promotes photographic history in general and Canadian photographic history in particular through our programs. journal, newsletter, fairs, auctions and free camera, equipment, and images assessments.
Meantime, we have added a clear unsubscribe line to our newsletter covers plus our snail mail address (in case any reader still uses that old technology) and we now file all requests to add to our newsletter mailing list.
