spare eyes

a spare unused 25mm f/1.4 lens made in Midland for the RCAF

Toronto. Industrial cameras which need to be ready 24/7 are backed by stores of spare parts. Lenses included. We have all seen lenses with various dents and bends all too apparent – signs they were accidentally dropped on or off the camera.

Military cameras were no different. When Leitz Canada existed, it manufactured ’16mm camera guns’ for the RCAF. Included in the ‘spares’ was a complete lens assembly ready to be mounted on the camera when a replacement was needed.

In February of 1985, I purchased a Leitz 16mm camera gun movie camera and a new, boxed replacement 25mm f/1.4 lens; both made in the Midland factory.

While we can’t say you will spot such an unusual piece at our 2026 events, we can say you will find many interesting items for your collection, whether camera or photographs. Our coming event is the popular summer outdoors event, the annual Trunk Sale held each July come rain or shine.

This year’s Trunk Sale will be held July 12th on the grounds of Legion Hall #101 in southwestern Toronto (Long Branch). The address will be familiar as we hold our auction in Hall #101. To reserve a place  (as a dealer – others are free to browse and buy), or to ask a question,  email Clint at fair@phsc.ca.

PS. Happy Canada Day everyone (for the uninitiated, the Dominion of Canada was established in 1867).
