Toronto. Image collectors can categorize pictures like that shown at left as ‘travel’, ‘water’, ‘canal’, ‘boats’ or even other names. The photograph was shot c1892 by Italian Paolo Salviati in Venice and titled “Rio Albrizzi”.
Editor Lansdale used this shot as his cover photograph for issue 27-4. Bob writes, “In the 1890s affluent Canadians joined other tourists to visit Europe for the Grand Tour. They brought back collections of photographs prepared by photographic entrepreneurs who specialized in providing scenics, architectural attractions and copies of cultural artwork.
“Thomas Ritchie of Ottawa revisits such a tour with his article, beginning on page 4, to discover the photographers who provided those pictures.
“Here we have a scene of the canals that threaded their way through Venice.”
