AWARDS AND GRANTS

 Three Awards/Grants To Win

The society is pleased to offer three awards/grants to promote research into Canada's photographic history:

  1. The PHSC Annual Research Award is an annual award of $500 for the best essay or monograph by a student on any aspect of Canadian photographic history. Runner-up award $250. Sponsored by Kodak Canada.  
  2. The PHSC Research Grant is a $500 grant to be awarded annually to a current member of the PHSC for original research into Canada's photographic history. 
  3. The PHSC Publication Grant is a grant of up to $1,000 to a member of the PHSC to aid in the publication of original research into Canada's photographic history in book or monograph form.

 PHSC Annual Research Award

For the best student paper, based on original research into any aspect of Canadian photographic history. Sponsored by Kodak Canada and administered by the PHSC.

Eligibility:

A student is classified as an individual, of any country, attending an educational institution as a student at least part time.

Topic:

Paper covering original research into any aspect of Canada's photographic history. It could involve equipment, images, individuals, general photographic history or any other topic. For example:

Annual Award:

$500 provided by Kodak Canada. Runner-up: $250. Additional rewards may be made. The PHSC reserves the right to withdraw the awards if no submission is considered of a satisfactory standard. A permanent trophy is also offered, ideally to be presented in person.

Selection Criteria:

Extent to which it expands existing knowledge or facilitates application of existing knowledge. Relevance to Canada.

Terms and Conditions:

Minimum 2,000 words (except listings, catalogues, etc.). Maximum 20,000 words. Typed on paper or disk. Include sources and bibliography. Paper must not have been previously published, and must have been written within the previous two years. Entrants agree that the PHSC may reproduce the work in whole or in part.

Deadline:

Paper must be submitted by November. Award announced by January 1, the following year. Judged by a panel of experts including a non PHSC member. Panel's decision is final.

 PHSC Research Grant

A $500 Research Grant to be awarded annually to a current PHSC member. Applicants submit proposed research topic and the PHSC selects one or more to sponsor.

Eligibility:

Must be a PHSC member at the time of application and at the time of publication.

Procedure:

Submit a proposal (maximum one page) outlining proposed research. Proposals should indicate the topic, reason for that choice, usefulness of the material, intended research sources/techniques, previous experience, expected output and planned schedule.

A panel of three members review and submit choice to executive for approval.

Selection Criteria:

Extent to which proposed research expands existing knowledge. Relevance to Canada.

Timing:

Outline proposals submitted to the PHSC before September 1st each year. Acceptances notified by October 1st.

Other Terms and Conditions:

Entrants agree that the PHSC may reproduce the work in whole or in part. Grant paid on receipt of satisfactory written material. Recipient is not precluded from also receiving publication grant.

 PHSC Publication Grant

A grant of up to $1,000 to aid the publication, in book or monograph form, of original research into Canada's photographic history.

Eligibility:

Must be a PHSC member at time of application and at time of publication.

Procedure:

Submit a written proposal (maximum one page) outlining topic, format, print run, cost and timing, together with a copy of the material if available and a sample of any previously published work.

Selection Criteria:

Extent to which material expands existing knowledge or facilitates application of existing knowledge. Relevance to Canada. Recommendations for acceptance to be made by a PHSC panel, for approval by the PHSC executive.

Grant:

Can be made at any time. Maximum of one grant annually to any one individual. Up to $1,000 paid immediately after publication. Not necessarily awarded in any one year, but more than one grant may be made each year.

Other Terms and Conditions:

Material should not have been previously published. PHSC involvement to be acknowledged in the publication. PHSC receives a predetermined number of copies for distribution to members. PHSC is allowed to provide copy for two pages in the publication. Applicants agree that the PHSC may reproduce the work in whole or in part.

Deadline:

Applications can be submitted at any time.
