I presented at the meeting last month and also wrote this brief review. Thanks to those who kindly reviewed my draft and corrected any errors. A special thanks to Bob Lansdale for doing most of the photographs and Lorne Shields for his supportive\u00a0input. I took the photos of Felix, Ed, and Bob Lansdale with a smaller, noisier sensor, slower speed, higher ISO \u00a0and no flash.<\/p>\n<p><i>President Clint Hryhorijiw began the meeting with some announcements: He encouraged all to sign up for the PHSC News which was promoted by John Morden. Wayne Gilbert was introduced and attendees were asked to sign up if not already a member. The 2017 PHSC events were noted (Auction, March 19; Spring Fair, May 28). Bob Lansdale noted he had a few copies of <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=7019\">Mike Smith\u2019s new book<\/a> on Reuben Sallows for a special price of $45.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The evening\u2019s presentations followed next while attendees were encouraged to monitor the silent auction items and sign up for the gift exchange to be held at the end of the evening. Since the theme was \u201cSmall\u201d a video camera and projector would have helped the audience to see the various tiny gizmos and photos presented tonight.<\/i><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7331\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FELIX-RUSSO-ST2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7331\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7331\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/FELIX-RUSSO-ST2016-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Felix Russo and 3rd edition of his Guide<\/p><\/div>\n<p>FELIX RUSSO.\u00a0Felix showed his new 3rd edition of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photoed.ca\/_p\/prd13\/2238590801\/product\/the-guide\"><i>PhotoEd GUIDE to Photography<\/i><\/a>. Some digital items were added after consulting various schools (resolution, white balance, etc).<\/p>\n<p>Felix said his\u00a0magazine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photoed.ca\">PhotoEd<\/a>, \u00a0was given notification that a government grant was forthcoming and would permit his spring issue to be double the size with added articles on Canada. This will\u00a0be the magazine\u2019s part in celebrating Canada\u2019s 150th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7333\" style=\"width: 171px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Manuel-Nunes-DSC_6008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7333\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7333\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Manuel-Nunes-DSC_6008-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"161\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manuel Nunes and two lenses adapted for digital mirrorless cameras<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MANUEL NUNES.\u00a0Manuel showed a book on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stargazing.net\/david\/astrophoto\/photolib.html\">Astro Photography<\/a> and discussed his personal experiences using \u00a0the popular 4\/3 sensor (G2) and APS-C (Sony) digital cameras and two used film camera lenses.<\/p>\n<p>One was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pentaxforums.com\/lensreviews\/S-M-C-Super-Takumar-300mm-F4.html\">Takumar 300mm f\/4\u00a0 <\/a>(450mm on an APS-C camera). It was bought at our <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?page_id=30\">fall fair<\/a> and Manuel had me try it out on my Sony NEX-6. Manuel explained some basics on astronomy and handed out <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ManuelNunes-SupermoonShots.jpg\">4&#215;6 postcards<\/a> of\u00a0 his super moon photographs taken last November.<\/p>\n<p>The other lens is a 200mm lens that fills an APS sensor. They can be found\u00a0at places like Value Village for $10 or $20 dollars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7335\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Ken-Bowes-DSC_5972.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7335\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7335\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Ken-Bowes-DSC_5972-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ken Bowes and his tiny Manfrotto tripod<\/p><\/div>\n<p>KEN BOWES.\u00a0Ken challenged members to guess his \u201csmall\u201d offering for the evening to blank response. He mentioned the maker &#8211; the Italian firm of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manfrotto.us\/products\/supports\/mini-tripods\/pocket\">Manfrotto<\/a>. Many in the audience recognized the name but still drew a blank on the little device.<\/p>\n<p>Ken finally explained that it was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RX9K1zij4n8\">Manfrotto mini pocket tripod<\/a> for mini cameras and demonstrated its ability to be tilted.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7337\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Bob-Wilson-DSC_5973.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7337\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7337\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Bob-Wilson-DSC_5973-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob Wilson and mini Stereo Viewer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BOB WILSON.\u00a0Bob usually sticks to <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmology.net\/stereography.htm\">stereo<\/a> subjects at these events. Wikipedia has a good summary on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stereoscopy\">Stereoscopy<\/a> techniques. Plus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectorsweekly.com\/photographs\/stereoviews\">this article<\/a> in Collectors Weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight, Bob\u00a0showed us both miniature stereo views and compact viewers.<\/p>\n<p>They were very interesting and timely items in this age of <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=6368\">virtual reality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7339\" style=\"width: 183px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Harold-Staats-DSC_5978.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7339\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7339\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Harold-Staats-DSC_5978-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harold Staats and his Daguerreotype<\/p><\/div>\n<p>HAROLD STAATS.\u00a0Harold had a different slant on things. He told a sad story about a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daguerreotype\">daguerreotype<\/a> he owns. It is a small cased image of a lady and child. Harold relates how he managed to lose the daguerreotype and to his delight discovered it once again while doing renovations. Once discovered, he dropped the case and managed to break its protective glass. He found a piece the right size for replacement and as he disassembled the case he noticed some glass chips on the surface of the image. He picked up a tissue and carefully rubbed the surface to remove the chips. To his dismay, the cloth rubbed off the image too, creating a narrow silvery line across the image. Blowing on the image, the image reappeared even more contrasty only to disappear moments later. His question was, \u201cwhat do I do now to restore the image\u201d? The audience immediately responded, \u201ccall Mike Robinson\u201d!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7342\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Bob-Carter-DSC_5981.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7342\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7342\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Bob-Carter-DSC_5981-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob and an early Leitz table tripod<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BOB CARTER.\u00a0Bob (author of this review) did a brief recap on use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telegraphy\">telegraph<\/a> in business a century ago and the clever alpha and numeric codes used by manufacturers to reduce the cost of the <i>pay per word <\/i>telegraph service.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested a big plus to collecting Leicas was the many accessories Leitz sold for their little cameras.\u00a0 He showed off some half dozen of the less common accessories such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=6907\">FIBLA<\/a> bubble level of the 1920s and 1930s, the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=hpcEp9408hgC&amp;pg=PA8&amp;lpg=PA8&amp;dq=non-Leitz+rangefinder+for+a+camera&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=dPhz5C2wEB&amp;sig=djjt2OSjK7AR9FhVg-wRRQHe2q0&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjq1cGbvrHRAhWh7oMKHWHGBbsQ6AEIWDAJ#v=onepage&amp;q=non-Leitz%20rangefinder%20for%20a%20camera&amp;f=false\">FODIS<\/a> rangefinder of the 1930s, the little post war <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=6922\">Chico<\/a> flash, the <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=6867\">HEBOO<\/a> slow speed device, the <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=6916\">APDOO<\/a> self timer, and couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/?p=7142\">table tripods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7346\" style=\"width: 167px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/CLINT-AND-TINY-BOOK-DSC_5985.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7346\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7346\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/CLINT-AND-TINY-BOOK-DSC_5985-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"157\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clint with his tiny folder of EIIR souvenirs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>CLINT HRYHORIJIW.\u00a0Clint had a tiny EIIR photo album &#8211; c1953 coronation souvenir. It is an accordion style string of photos with a clip for a purse or clothes zipper. The enlargement shows the detail better. Click icon at left.<\/p>\n<p>He followed that treat with two portraits of first nations people he had just acquired. He commenced to open the back of one photograph to see if any studio was noted. And there it was &#8211; taken by <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcollections.uwyo.edu:8180\/luna\/servlet\/uwydbuwy~54~54\">Baker and Johnston of Wyoming<\/a>. The photo appeared to be 1885-1900. The subjects may even be Canadian natives since these photographers ranged north as far as southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7348\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ED-WARNER-ST2016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7348\" class=\"wp-image-7348 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ED-WARNER-ST2016-sm.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ed Warner and a little self timer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>ED WARNER.\u00a0Ed presented three small items. The first was a pocket knife. What made it memorable was its engraving,\u00a0 \u201cThe Photographic Historical Society of Canada\u201d. Ed recalled getting it at an executive meeting,but not the date.<\/p>\n<p>He then showed two other small items popular in the mid last century &#8211; a non-Leitz <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/bhp\/self-timer\">timer<\/a>, and a non-Leitz rangefinder.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7350\" style=\"width: 163px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7350\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Lorne-Shields-DSC_6000-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lorne Shields and one of his cycle cards<\/p><\/div>\n<p>LORNE SHIELDS.\u00a0Lorne is a well-known bicycle collector and popular speaker. Lorne has collected bicycle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/search?q=bicycle+CDV+photos&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;biw=1367&amp;bih=1051&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbo=u&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi8zsHBv7HRAhVI2oMKHc_aCKIQsAQIGQ\">photos<\/a> for over 40 years. He noted while virtually all his photos have bicycles on the obverse (front), rarely do they have have bicycles on their reverse (back) in the photographer\u2019s studio stamp. He commented on and showed a recent (and favourite) find &#8211; the obverse having a pair of cyclists with the reverse having both bicycling reference in the text and a vignette of a cyclist. The photo as taken by a photographer in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vintagenorthshields\/\">North Shields, England<\/a> and since Lorne\u2019s last name is Shields, it was for him, a fortuous acquisition. Lorne wrapped up his brief talk with a rare photograph that had a bicycle image printed on the image\u2019s covering tissue.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_7352\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7352\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7352\" src=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/BOB-LANSDALE-ST2016-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob Lansdale shows how he used his two cameras in a cover still shot.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BOB LANSDALE.\u00a0The last speaker of the evening was our editor, Bob Lansdale. Bob displayed his two miniature cameras, a rare\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/camerapedia.wikia.com\/wiki\/Eho-Altissa\">Eho<\/a>\u00a0baby box camera and newer sub miniature 16mm <a href=\"http:\/\/camerapedia.wikia.com\/wiki\/Steky\">Steky II<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He used them plus some CDVs to complement the far bigger Shew camera from John Kantymir\u2019s collection.
