My friend George Dunbar dropped me a note a few days ago regarding a photograph taken by William James back in 1922 at a funeral on St Clair Avenue West in Toronto (fonds 1244, item 1020) \u00a0courtesy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gencat4.eloquent-systems.com\/webcat\/request\/DoMenuRequest?SystemName=City+of+Toronto+Archives&amp;UserName=wa+public&amp;Password=&amp;TemplateProcessID=6000_1580_11104&amp;bCachable=1&amp;MenuName=City+of+Toronto+Archives&amp;eloquentref=toronto\">City of Toronto Archives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Canadians of a certain age remember the famous Eaton&#8217;s &#8211; Simpson&#8217;s competition. The two firms once had large\u00a0department stores at Yonge St in Toronto on either side of Queen. Both companies published thick &#8211; really thick &#8211; catalogues each year. Growing up just north of\u00a0Toronto, I can recall the excitement of going through the catalogues near Christmas time to see what &#8220;Santa&#8221; would bring. The blog site &#8220;T<a href=\"http:\/\/torontothenandnow.blogspot.ca\/2011\/07\/22-eaton-family-legacy-then-and-now.html\">oronto Then and Now<\/a>&#8221; has a wonderful article on Eaton&#8217;s.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Eaton&#8217;s hosted the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto_Santa_Claus_Parade\">Santa Claus <\/a>parade in Toronto each year and were renown for their tastefully decorated Christmas season windows. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timothy_Eaton\">Timothy<\/a> Eaton established his store in Toronto and his enterprise grew by leaps and bounds. Both Eaton&#8217;s and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simpsons_(department_store)\">Simpson&#8217;s<\/a> are long gone now, but Eaton&#8217;s is still here as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eaton_Centre\">Eaton Centre<\/a> &#8211; no Eaton&#8217;s any more, just the centre at Yonge and Queen.<\/p>\n<p>Timothy Eaton died and his son,<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Craig_Eaton\"> Sir John Craig Eaton<\/a>, took over the business in 1907. In 1922, at a youthful 45, Sir John\u00a0too died and his funeral took place in the city, faithfully recorded for posterity by a collection of photographers, their tripods all in a row outside the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontopubliclibrary.ca\/detail.jsp?R=DC-PICTURES-R-4681\">Timothy Eaton Memorial United Church<\/a> on Saint Clair Avenue West (note the English Bobby-style hats on the policemen).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto.
