I received an email courtesy of the Daguerreian Society this past week announcing a book and signing (earlier today) by author Sarah Kate Gillespie down in Washington D.C. The book sounds like it would be of interest to our members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE EARLY AMERICAN DAGUERREOTYPE,<br \/>\nTALK, BOOK SIGNING, AND OBJECTS OUT OF STORAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday, May 27, 2016, 12\u00a0&#8211;\u00a01:30pm<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Presidential Reception Suite, first floor<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Constitution Avenue NW between 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Streets NW<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> Washington, DC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The daguerreotype was patented in France in 1839, but by 1851 this early photographic method had been so improved by American daguerreotypists that it was often referred to as &#8220;the American process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a talk based on her new book,\u00a0<i>The Early American Daguerreotype: Cross-Currents in Art and Technology<\/i>, author\u00a0<b>Sarah Kate Gillespie<\/b>\u00a0will\u00a0recount the activities of the unexpected mix of fine artists, scientists, and mechanical tinkerers who transformed the daguerreotype into a new\u00a0 way to see the world.<\/p>\n<p>After the talk, National Museum of American History curator\u00a0<b>Shannon Perich<\/b>\u00a0will show rare daguerreotypes from the Museum&#8217;s collections.
