The Gladstone Hotel is one of the oldest hotels in Toronto. It was originally built in 1889 across from the then existing Parkdale railroad station. It has the original old elevator which must be hand operated. It has been renovated in recent years and it’s unique 37 rooms have been individually designed by different artists. It has a restaurant, bar and hosts many events, art exhibitions and is a popular gathering place for the local arts community.

“This series of images began with the rediscovery of some 35mm transparency slides I had taken many years ago. They were water damaged and I put them away to dry. Now, months later they were covered in a strange, white, efflorescent, crystal-like material. I thought they had been totally destroyed, but upon closer examination, although some were damaged they still had remnants of the original picture. Others had evolved into surreal, otherworldly images. This phenomenon was a natural process and was not computer generated.

“I was born in what was then West Germany in the city of Braunschweig where Franke & Heidecke manufactured the Rolleiflex camera. I immigrated to Canada with my family when I was 7 years old. My older brother introduced me to photography as a child and it has been a life long passion ever since. At first landscapes and portraits were my main subjects but my love of music naturally led me to concert photography. I have been photographing concerts and festivals since the 1970s. My work includes photos of iconic stars, like Bowie, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Anne Lennox, to folk artists, jazz singers and talented local musicians too. I’ve won the peoples choice award 2 years in a row at the Beach International Jazz Festival. I have exhibited my work in numerous galleries over the years. My work has been published several times in various publications including 1988 Toronto’s Toronto, (a photographic collection that was selected by the City of Toronto as an official presentation gift to visiting dignitaries). My photos are in the collections of the Toronto Transit Commission and the City of Toronto archives.

“I’ve have always been interested in the history of photography and photographic processes and I’ve experimented with Rockland Colloid, Cyanotype, Van Dyke, and Gum Bichromate. I’ve been a member of the Photographic Historical Society of Canada for many years.”

Come out and see this exhibit in one of Toronto’s landmarks.

Toronto.
