Toronto<\/strong>. Our late editor, Robert Lansdale, had a soft spot for early colour processes and cameras. In issue 28-2, Bob wrote a lengthy article on the topic titled, “COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY \u00a0IN THE EARLY 1900s”.<\/p>\n

Bob begins the article, “From the earliest days of photography, man\u2019s desire for coloured\u00a0images was achieved by hand, applying dry transparent colours to\u00a0daguerreotypes through, to include, cartes-de visite.<\/p>\n

“Crystoleum and oil\u00a0colouring peaked about 1907 while 1920 saw the ubiquitous Velox\u00a0watercolours marketed by Kodak.<\/p>\n

“The earliest discovery of colour produced from the action of light\u00a0on silver was by Ritter. Johann Seebeck in Jena repeated the experiment in 1810 with a long exposure on damp silver chloride using the\u00a0spectrum produced by a prism. Herschel repeated it in 1840.<\/p>\n

“Lending credence to Levi Hill\u2019s 1851\u00a0claim of colour daguerreotypes,\u00a0Daguerre himself observed red brick\u00a0buildings exhibiting colour on his\u00a0plates. Bequerel corroborated this\u00a0observation and Ni\u00e9pce de St.\u00a0Victor produced ‘heliochromes’ in 1850.” … The rest of Bob’s illustrated story is on the free members-only DVD\/Thumb drive.<\/p>\n
