Toronto<\/strong>. One of the most famous early \u00a0photographers in Canada was Scotland born William Notman. Notman was based at his studio on Bleury St in Montreal, the premier city in Canada at the time.<\/p>\n

A member in 2001 captured some modern scenes once taken by Notman.<\/p>\n

His experiences are recorded for the Journal issue 28-2 by past president Les Jones in his article,”Rekindling William Notman’s Ghost”.<\/p>\n

Les begins, “The ghost of\u00a0William Notman was\u00a0seen in Montreal last\u00a0year. The most prominent 19th century\u00a0Canadian photographer\u00a0appeared in all the usual\u00a0places, Mont Royal,\u00a0Notre Dame, mid-town,\u00a0the port, and more. And\u00a0he had his photographic\u00a0equipment with him.<\/p>\n

“OK, so it wasn\u2019t a\u00a0ghost, but talented\u00a0PHSC member \/ photographer Andrzej\u00a0Maciejewski, recreating\u00a0thirty-six of the Notman\u00a0Studio\u2019s most important\u00a0images, 100 years\u00a0onwards.<\/p>\n

“The period\u00a0being rephotographed is\u00a01860-1912 and included\u00a0the years after Notman\u2019s\u00a0death in 1891 when\u00a0many photographs were\u00a0taken by William\u2019s sons\u00a0and staff.” …<\/p>\n
