Toronto, January 15, 2014.<\/strong>\u00a0We are saddened to report\u00a0the death of Gerald Loban who\u00a0served 37 years on the PHSC\u00a0Executive Committee. Gerry\u00a0joined in 1977 as member number\u00a00150. He and wife Pauline\u00a0were Co-Chairmen of the 10th\u00a0Photographica Fair <\/i>of 1984.<\/p>\n

After the fair, Gerry became the\u00a0PHSC Librarian on the 1985-87\u00a0executive, a position he held until 2013. He often had a\u00a0table at the PHSC fairs and gave\u00a0a number of lecture presentations\u00a0to members of the Society\u00a0including: Julia Margaret\u00a0Cameron\u2019s Photographs, A\u00a0History of Portraiture, Old Time\u00a0Photo Studio<\/em>, and The Leica<\/em>. He was to be our featured speaker for\u00a0February 2014 on The Minox Camera<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Gerry was born in England in 1931. His Canadian parents were\u00a0from Winnipeg and as entertainers (a band) they found better opportunities\u00a0for engagements in England during the \u201cDirty 30s.\u201d Gerry travelled\u00a0back and forth to Canada where grandparents were located\u00a0but got his main education in England. Pauline and Gerry married\u00a0in Toronto but moved to London, Ontario in the 1960s. In London, he joined\u00a0London Life when they were installing their first computer (a machine as large as a room in those days<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Gerry was always interested in photography\u00a0and bought a photo studio in downtown London. They tried to\u00a0make a go in baby portraiture for two years but there just wasn\u2019t a\u00a0profit to be made. They moved to Toronto and again entered engineering\u00a0and computer sales. There was a lot of travelling all over the\u00a0world: Europe, Japan, Brazil etc.<\/p>\n

Gerry was involved heavily in the\u00a0design and installation of the Canada Post mail-sorting computerization\u00a0\u2013 it was his project.<\/p>\n

Having moved to Unionville, he became involved with their\u00a0annual June Festival. Gerry ordered up an old-time photography kit\u00a0from the States, picked it up at Buffalo and set up a booth at the Unionville\u00a0fair. Pauline dressed customers in the old-time costumes and hats\u00a0then Gerry photographed them with special sepia Polaroid film and presented the\u00a0pictures in a folder. There was a constant line-up of customers.<\/p>\n

Gerry\u2019s other passion was garage sales throughout the Unionville\u00a0community where he picked up all his collectable cameras etc. The\u00a0excess stuff he auctioned off on eBay and had quite a few lucrative\u00a0sales to Japan and China.<\/p>\n

Gerry was highly involved in the Church of Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u00a0and with Pauline were baptized in 1954. He was a church Elder and\u00a0served for 60 years. The congregation, gathered at his memorial\u00a0services, proved his popularity. He leaves two sons, David and\u00a0Stephen, two grandchildren, Rachel and Garon, and his wife\u00a0Pauline. He will be missed!<\/p>\n
