Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron c1865<\/p><\/div>\n

Toronto<\/strong>. For the cover shot of issue 27-5, editor Lansdale searched his own collection for this stereograph of Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron taken by Mr J W Love about 1865.<\/p>\n

Bob explains, “Our cover illustration is taken\u00a0from a stereograph by J. W. Love, of\u00a0Portage City, Wisconsin \u2013 one of the\u00a0founders of The American Photographic\u00a0Exchange Club in 1861.<\/p>\n

“He travelled\u00a0extensively in Canada and was among\u00a0the first tourists to visit Muskoka. In\u00a0flowing hand script on the verso of the\u00a0card is: ‘View near the foot of South\u00a0Bay Manitoulin Island, C.W. [Canada West, about 2.5x the area of Texas, now the province of Ontario]’ In the photo three men pose stiffly on a shore\u00a0of precambrian rock\u00a0with pine trees as a\u00a0backdrop.<\/p>\n

“The February\u00a01867 Philadelphia\u00a0Photographer\u00a0acknowledged receipt\u00a0of other Canadian\u00a0stereo views: \u201c\u2026<\/p>\n

“\u2018Victoria Bridge\u2019; \u2018Wolf\u2019s (sic) Monument, and New Gaol, near Quebec\u2019; \u2026\u2018The Citadel of Quebec\u2019; and a number of winter Niagara views, which are very beautiful.’<\/p>\n

“The artist suggested forming a\u00a0stereoscopic exchange club offering his\u00a0views in exchange for others. As was\u00a0his custom, Love marked his photo by\u00a0scratching his name into the image near\u00a0the bottom of the right hand photo. ?”<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
