Notman captures the Taylor wedding party in Montreal c1864<\/p><\/div>\n

Toronto<\/strong>. With the chilly weather, it’s a great time to think ahead to June brides … In issue 26-3 of our journal, editor Bob Lansdale wrote and illustrated an article titled, “Wedding Photography …”. The images are from the McCord museum \u00a0in Montreal. Bob encourages others to dig into the history of wedding photography to add more history to the genre.<\/p>\n

The article begins, “Long before candid wedding photography came to the fore with dozens [of] photographs and bulging albums, studios\u00a0in Canada were recording for posterity\u00a0the bridal couple, their attendants and\u00a0their families.<\/p>\n

“Over the decades the Notman\u00a0Studios in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto,\u00a0St. John, and Halifax recorded thousands\u00a0of wedding parties with the images still\u00a0preserved as part of the Notman\u00a0Collection at the McCord\u00a0Museum in Montreal.<\/p>\n

“As a\u00a0research tool many of the\u00a0images are accessible via\u00a0internet at\u00a0http:\/\/www.mccord-museum.qc.ca<\/a>\u00a0using the word \u201cwedding\u201d\u00a0to extract them from 58,803\u00a0images in the data base.<\/p>\n

“A sampling here shows\u00a0(fig. 1) [see left in this post] a full-plate print by\u00a0William Notman bearing crop\u00a0marks and inscribed data identifying it as ‘James Taylor\u2019s wedding Group, Montreal, QC, 1864’.” …<\/p>\n
