Toronto<\/strong>. After Leitz sold its Midland plant to the American military contractor \u00a0Hughes Aircraft (Los Angeles), Leica sales and repair in Canada bounced from one distributor to another, landing briefly at Lisle-Kelco who closed in 2003<\/a>. The brief article accompanying the photo shown here stated, “In a major shake up for Leica Camera AG some eight distributorships throughout the world have changed hands.<\/p>\n

“Feeling they should\u00a0have a much better\u00a0position in the market,\u00a0the moves are aimed\u00a0to rejuvenate interest\u00a0in Leica precision\u00a0quality products which\u00a0defined the 35mm\u00a0field during the 20th\u00a0century.<\/p>\n

“The Japanese\u00a0dominate the SLR\u00a0marketplace and might\u00a0turn aggressively to\u00a0the rangefinder segment to cause more pressure on Leica\u2019s\u00a0weakened financial condition [far more robust in 2025].<\/p>\n

“Major\u00a0changes and mergers may yet be in the\u00a0future for European survival.\u00a0Lisle-Kelco is already recognized for\u00a0its \u201ccadillac\u201d line of photo products like\u00a0Hasselblad, Gitzo, Broncolor, Durst and\u00a0Leaf, etc.<\/p>\n

“President Andy Petersons, delighted\u00a0to add another diamond to the L-K crown,\u00a0announced, ‘We are proud that the Leica product line will be part of our offerings\u00a0to the photo industry. In addition, Minox,\u00a0a subsidiary company of Leica, with a\u00a0range of miniature cameras and 35mm\u00a0compact cameras, plus a range of binoculars and other unique instruments, will\u00a0also be part of our product offering.'”<\/p>\n

An early product was the replica UR-Leica shown in a gorgeous brochure from Lisle-Kelco. \u00a0Eventually Leica departed from Canada. Teaneck, NJ is now their North American Headquarters<\/a>.<\/p>\n
