Toronto<\/strong>. Most of us have fond memories of visiting a movie house as a kid and cheering on the ‘hero(s)’ as they thundered across the screen.<\/p>\n

Member Robert Gutteridge<\/a> was our resident movie expert of the day. In January 2000, \u00a0his book titled “Magic Moments<\/a>” was published. The book covers the first two decades of movies here in the big smoke (1894-1914). Bob was a teacher, movie creator, hardware collector, speaker at our meetings, writer, and participant in our fairs, displaying unique movie gear along with Fran\u00e7ois LeMai of Montreal, another serious collector of movie gear.<\/p>\n

I wrote the odd book review for the journal, including Bob’s book when it was first released: “Robert Gutteridge is an educator in visual\u00a0art and film, collector of motion picture apparatus and optical toys, a filmmaker, and a member\u00a0of both the Movie Machine Society and the\u00a0Photographic Historical Society of Canada.<\/p>\n

“I first met Robert Gutteridge at one of our\u00a0photo fairs; later, he was a guest speaker at a\u00a0Toronto meeting. Along with his submission for\u00a0a PHSC Publication Grant, Robert provided a\u00a0short extract from his book-in-progress. I read\u00a0the extract and decided then and there to order a\u00a0copy of his history of the early years of moving\u00a0pictures in Toronto.<\/p>\n

“He is a natural storyteller,\u00a0making the dry historical writings come alive.\u00a0The copy was delivered last night (early in 2000) \u2013what a\u00a0great book! I spent hours browsing through\u00a0Magic Moments, <\/i>and I was intrigued to read more the next day\u00a0during breaks and lunch.<\/p>\n

“The book is the culmination of two decades of research into\u00a0early cinema, especially of the technology and films.” …<\/p>\n
