The good reverend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgalleries.org\/art-and-artists\/artists\/rev-charles-lutwidge-dodgson-lewis-carroll\">Dodgson<\/a> (a.k.a. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lewis_Carroll\">Lewis Carroll<\/a>) was both a photographer and author (Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland , anyone?). He was a \u00a0contemporary of \u00a0Julia Margaret Cameron, who he took in a portrait. Unfortunately, few of his photographs survive.<\/p>\n<p>Old photo collectors who want to learn \u00a0more about the chemical basis of photography are in luck these days with both books and the internet ready to offer instruction and videos on \u00a0how our favourite items are created,<\/p>\n<p>Long before Daguerreotypes and photography, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencehistory.org\/stories\/magazine\/silver-and-sunlight\/\">effect of light on silver<\/a> was well known. By mid last century we were blessed with books detailing the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photochemistry\">photographic processes<\/a> both in layman&#8217;s terms and in very scholarly works.<\/p>\n<p>In 1957 Kodak offered is soft cover text &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/ca\/listing\/693188471\/photo-chemistry-in-black-and-white-and?show_sold_out_detail=1&amp;ref=nla_listing_details\">Photo Chemistry<\/a>&#8221; which clearly explained the photographic processes and offered commonly available formulae. It is a simple and well written 124 page book that sold for $1.25 back in the day.
