For over a century, Montreal was our largest city per capital. And the most well known photographic studio in Montreal was operated by Notman with branches in Ontario and down the American east coast.<\/p>\n<p>The studio photograph at left is the cover shot of issue 24-3 and is described as, &#8220;Appropriate\u00a0for the season\u00a0our cover\u00a0depicts a winter scene as\u00a0constructed in\u00a0the studios of\u00a0Notman &amp;\u00a0Sandham of\u00a0Montreal circa 1878-80.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The same background can be seen in\u00a0<i>William Notman &#8211; The Stamp of a Studio<\/i>,\u00a0page 119 showing Rifle Brigade men in\u00a0a winter set-up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The photograph could have been stripped into composite photos for sports clubs or used as part of the wide decorative border to such finished groups.
