Toronto<\/strong>. The picture at left is that of UK engineer I K Brunel<\/a> in 1857 in front of the massive chains of the ‘SS Great Eastern’ taken by Robert Howlett<\/a> a year or so before Howlett’s early death at 27.<\/p>\n

We often think of photography as a means to enhance history, but in this case one photograph captures the essence of the Victorian era<\/a> and its ideals.<\/p>\n

The story of the photograph is reproduced from the Autumn 1997 issue of This England<\/em> and begins, “A photographer on special assignment from a London\u00a0magazine, 140 years ago, managed to persuade the\u00a0great Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, to\u00a0stand still long enough for him to take a picture.<\/p>\n

“It was\u00a0to become one of the most famous shots in history.\u00a0The power of the image is still arresting. There stands\u00a0Brunel in muddy boots and stovepipe hat, cigar firmly\u00a0jammed in mouth, hands just as firmly thrust in pockets. Behind him: the massive hand-forged launching\u00a0chains of his Great Eastern<\/i>, then the world\u2019s biggest\u00a0ship, symbolize the size and scale of his achievements.<\/p>\n

“Robert Howlett, described by a contemporary as \u201cOne\u00a0of the most skilful photographers of the day,\u201d was commissioned with Joseph Cundall to make a record for the\u00a0Illustrated Times <\/i>of the building of \u201cLeviathan\u201d, as the\u00a0press dubbed the iron ship.” …<\/p>\n
