Many of us think about the romance of the Klondike gold rush in the Yukon territory in the late 1800s.<\/p>\n<p>Bob was reviewing a book by Jill Downie (<a href=\"https:\/\/cbra.library.utoronto.ca\/items\/show\/4821\">Passionate Pen<\/a>) and begins his article, &#8220;Waddington\u2019s in Toronto have auctioned an extraordinary collection of photographs, correspondence\u00a0and personal memorabilia on the centenary of the\u00a0Klondike Gold Rush. The material was brought to light\u00a0by author Jill Downie while collecting biographic details for a book on Faith Fenton, an\u00a0unsung heroine of Canada\u2019s late 19th century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;She defied conventions and restrictions\u00a0placed on her gender, to become a monumental figure in the shaping of this country. With\u00a0the completion of the book, family descendants chose to disperse the collection via\u00a0Waddington\u2019s at a time that proved auspicious\u00a0to the Klondike anniversary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;The book, <em>Passionate Pen<\/em>, reveals\u00a0the life struggle of Alice Freeman\u00a0(1857-1936), brought up in the Ontario\u00a0communities of Bowmanville and\u00a0Barrie. She became an underpaid school teacher\u00a0for 19 years in Toronto\u2019s lower-class industrial\u00a0area of Front and Sherbourne Sts. It was a time\u00a0when women\u2019s place was in the home; schoolteaching served as a job of convenience until\u00a0marriage would hopefully replace it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;But Alice developed a hidden persona writing a column in the 1880\u2019s for the Barrie paper,\u00a0<i>Northern Advance<\/i>, under the romantic nom-de-plume of STELLA.&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Bob Lansdale&#8217;s article in full, plus other articles appear in the issue 23-2 pdf on the free members only DVD\/thumb drive.
