Various photographers have chosen to pick popular city locations which were photographed many decades ago, and show what they look like today given roughly the same field of view, etc.<\/p>\n<p>In our journal issue 22-1, the late Stan White chose to compare stereo views &#8220;then and now&#8221;. The example here is the &#8220;Preston Springs Hotel&#8221;, just a bit west of the city. In his article titled, &#8220;Then and Now&#8221;, Stan begins, &#8220;Many people think that history finished the day <span class=\"s1\">they <\/span><span class=\"s2\">were <\/span>born<span class=\"s3\">. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">It <\/span><span class=\"s2\">comes\u00a0<\/span>as surprise <span class=\"s5\">to <\/span>an o<span class=\"s6\">ld <\/span><span class=\"s5\">man <\/span>to find <span class=\"s5\">that <\/span>the\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">young consider <\/span>him <span class=\"s7\">his<\/span>tory. Man<span class=\"s3\">y <\/span><span class=\"s8\">of <\/span>us\u00a0see our short sojourn <span class=\"s5\">through life <\/span>as\u00a0though from <span class=\"s1\">a railway station <\/span>looking\u00a0back down the tracks <span class=\"s8\">of <\/span>time<span class=\"s9\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We <span class=\"s1\">should\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">be thinking <\/span><span class=\"s10\">of <\/span>ourselves as <span class=\"s5\">passengers <\/span>on\u00a0a <span class=\"s5\">train <\/span>speeding <span class=\"s5\">into the <\/span>future at <span class=\"s5\">the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s<\/span><span class=\"s3\">a<\/span>me <span class=\"s1\">speed <\/span><span class=\"s11\">it <\/span>is leaving <span class=\"s1\">the <\/span>past behind <span class=\"s1\">&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">a <\/span>train <span class=\"s1\">whose <\/span>passengers <span class=\"s1\">are feveri<\/span><span class=\"s3\">s<\/span>hly making history<span class=\"s3\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s12\">&#8220;It <\/span>behooves <span class=\"s1\">a<\/span><span class=\"s13\">ll <\/span>historical s<span class=\"s2\">oc<\/span><span class=\"s14\">i<\/span><span class=\"s1\">eties <\/span>not\u00a0<span class=\"s14\">t<\/span><span class=\"s1\">o <\/span>become s<span class=\"s15\">0 <\/span>involved <span class=\"s11\">in <\/span>the past that\u00a0they have no tim<span class=\"s3\">e <\/span>for th<span class=\"s3\">e <\/span>present<span class=\"s3\">, <\/span>for the\u00a0present is the history <span class=\"s8\">of <\/span>the <span class=\"s1\">future<\/span><span class=\"s3\">. <\/span><span class=\"s16\">We <\/span><span class=\"s5\">live <\/span><span class=\"s17\">in <\/span>a young society. <span class=\"s18\">In\u00a0<\/span>Ontario, <span class=\"s1\">even <\/span>if <span class=\"s1\">we <\/span>include the <span class=\"s1\">aborigin<\/span><span class=\"s3\">a<\/span>l\u00a0tapestry, there is <span class=\"s14\">littl<\/span><span class=\"s1\">e <\/span>tangible pictorial<span class=\"s3\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s12\">hi<\/span>storica<span class=\"s14\">l <\/span>evidence that goes <span class=\"s5\">back more\u00a0<\/span>than <span class=\"s1\">250 years<\/span><span class=\"s3\">. <\/span>Perhaps <span class=\"s3\">a <\/span>little more <span class=\"s19\">or <\/span><span class=\"s1\">a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s14\">littl<\/span>e <span class=\"s14\">l<\/span>ess <span class=\"s20\">in <\/span>other <span class=\"s5\">parts <\/span><span class=\"s10\">of <\/span>Canada.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Members can read Stan&#8217;s thought provoking article in the issue 22-1 pdf file on the members-only free DVD which contains the first 40 volumes of &#8220;<em>Photographic Canadiana<\/em>&#8221; including an index of all articles (the index is in various formats).
