Toronto<\/strong>. Little school kids can be unintentionally cruel. Any kid who falters or has an obvious medical issue gets an immediate ‘nick name’. For example, children who have corrective glasses are almost automatically called ‘four eyes’!<\/p>\n

In the first decades of photography one way to over come copy issues was to use cameras with multi lenses – four or more. The cover shot for issue 21-5 shows an example of a four lens camera. I used that \u00a0image from a pdf of 21-5, adjusted in Topaz \u00a0Photo AI, Focus Magic, and Affinity Photo.<\/p>\n

Inside the issue the photo is described as follows, “Four len<\/span>s we<\/span>t-plate <\/span>camera owned b<\/span>y <\/span>Les\u00a0<\/span>Jone<\/span>s <\/span>i<\/span>s <\/span>typical o<\/span>f <\/span>the syste<\/span>m u<\/span>sed <\/span>to <\/span>produce\u00a0duplicate imag<\/span>es <\/span>on one ph<\/span>o<\/span>tographic plate<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Im<\/span>ages are <\/span>usua<\/span>lly unrecognized as <\/span>s<\/span>te<\/span>reos.”<\/span><\/p>\n

An article in the issue (21-5) called ” The Unnoticed Stereo” was written by Bob \u00a0Lansdale, \u00a0assisted by Bob Wilson. It begins, “This s<\/span>t<\/span>ory <\/span>started to unfold <\/span>when\u00a0I<\/span>rwin <\/span>Reic<\/span>hstein of <\/span>Ottawa submitted a X<\/span>erox of <\/span>two cartes-de-visite<\/a> by George F. <\/span>Maitland. <\/span>Both photos <\/span>looked identical\u00a0but one <\/span>carried the <\/span>stamp of <\/span>Maitland <\/span>‘s\u00a0<\/span>St. Catherines Gallery (1868-1874) while\u00a0the other indicated <\/span>his location as <\/span>Buffalo,\u00a0New York. <\/span>It <\/span>appears <\/span>Maitland followed\u00a0the s<\/span>t<\/span>y<\/span>le <\/span>of <\/span>other Canadian arti<\/span>sts by\u00a0<\/span>establishing a studio in <\/span>th<\/span>e more <\/span>active\u00a0market <\/span>of <\/span>America’s <\/span>largest inland port.<\/p>\n

“The photos <\/span>s<\/span>how the grave <\/span>of <\/span>William\u00a0Maitland with a <\/span>l<\/span>a<\/span>dy <\/span>(inscrib<\/span>ed as\u00a0“M<\/span>innie“<\/span>) <\/span>s<\/span>itting close by. <\/span>The picture\u00a0had e<\/span>ither a<\/span>llegorical interpretation or a\u00a0<\/span>close family connection.<\/p>\n

“I <\/span>was quite surprised when Bob\u00a0<\/span>Wil<\/span>son, <\/span>free-viewing the rough X<\/span>erox \u00a0decla<\/span>r<\/span>ed <\/span>the pictures to <\/span>be a stereo pair.\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>‘m <\/span>always a<\/span>mazed how <\/span>some indi<\/span>viduals\u00a0can <\/span>dis<\/span>loca<\/span>te their eyeba<\/span>ll<\/span>s <\/span>in <\/span>order <\/span>t<\/span>o\u00a0<\/span>merge two separate <\/span>photos into one stereo\u00a0<\/span>im<\/span>age. <\/span>Mr. Maitland must have\u00a0photographed the <\/span>scene with <\/span>a stereo\u00a0camera <\/span>then spl<\/span>it <\/span>the negatives to each <\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>his galleries <\/span>to <\/span>provide cards <\/span>for the\u00a0collector market.”<\/p>\n
