Even before the 1870s, our Native Canadians were often chosen as subjects by photographers. The Native Canadians described these photographers as &#8216;Face Pullers&#8217;. Brock Silversides captured a segment of these photos in his 1994 book titled, &#8220;<span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large celwidget\" data-csa-c-id=\"5tce6t-p8mqff-yj3nt3-c90mio\" data-cel-widget=\"productTitle\">The Face Pullers: Photographing Native Canadians 1871-1939&#8243;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bob Wilson did a review of the book in issue 20-3. His review begins, &#8220;Natives have <span class=\"s1\">a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">l<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ways <\/span>been popular <span class=\"s1\">subj<\/span>ects, both for photographers taking pictures <span class=\"s1\">and <\/span>for people buying <span class=\"s1\">them. <\/span>This <span class=\"s1\">was\u00a0<\/span>true <span class=\"s3\">in <\/span>the 1840s <span class=\"s1\">and <\/span>1850s <span class=\"s1\">when <\/span>photography <span class=\"s1\">was <\/span>just beginning. And it is true\u00a0today<span class=\"s4\">, <\/span>with <span class=\"s1\">such <\/span>photographs <span class=\"s1\">eagerly\u00a0<\/span>sought <span class=\"s5\">by <\/span>co<span class=\"s6\">ll<\/span>ectors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Brock Silversides presents <span class=\"s1\">a <\/span>fine <span class=\"s1\">selec<\/span>tion <span class=\"s7\">of <\/span>photographs <span class=\"s7\">of <\/span>Native <span class=\"s1\">Canadians.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">These were made <\/span><span class=\"s8\">in <\/span>areas <span class=\"s8\">in <\/span>Canada which <span class=\"s5\">now\u00a0<\/span>comprise <span class=\"s5\">the <\/span>central and southern <span class=\"s5\">portions\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s9\">of <\/span>the provinces o<span class=\"s10\">f <\/span>Saskatchewan <span class=\"s1\">and\u00a0<\/span>Alberta. 1871 <span class=\"s1\">was <\/span>the <span class=\"s1\">starti<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">g <\/span>date<span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">when\u00a0<\/span>the first photographs <span class=\"s7\">of <\/span>the Native People\u00a0<span class=\"s8\">in <\/span><span class=\"s5\">this <\/span>area were <span class=\"s5\">taken by <\/span>Charles\u00a0Horetzky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Silversides begins <span class=\"s1\">with a <\/span>brief <span class=\"s1\">summary\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s9\">of <\/span>the people <span class=\"s1\">who <\/span>made thes<span class=\"s1\">e <\/span>photo<span class=\"s5\">graphs. They <\/span><span class=\"s11\">fa<\/span><span class=\"s6\">ll <\/span><span class=\"s5\">into <\/span>several groups: <span class=\"s5\">the\u00a0<\/span>survey <span class=\"s5\">photographers <\/span>(including\u00a0Horetzky)<span class=\"s4\">, <\/span>the <span class=\"s1\">itinerants who <\/span>travelled\u00a0through the <span class=\"s1\">area, <\/span>the resident profes<span class=\"s1\">sional\u00a0<\/span>photographers<span class=\"s4\">, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">and <\/span>the <span class=\"s1\">amateur <\/span>photographers.<span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;Silversides then deals <span class=\"s1\">with <\/span>the &#8216;genera<span class=\"s12\">ll<\/span>y accepted <span class=\"s5\">truism&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">that natives\u00a0<\/span>did <span class=\"s2\">n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ot <\/span><span class=\"s2\">lik<\/span><span class=\"s1\">e <\/span>to have their photograph taken<span class=\"s4\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">and <\/span>has included <span class=\"s1\">some <\/span>interesting quotations from <span class=\"s1\">accounts <\/span><span class=\"s9\">of <\/span>the photographers\u00a0about difficulties that they <span class=\"s1\">encountered.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Members can read the rest of Bob&#8217;s book review in the 20-3 pdf file on the free members-only DVD.
