Toronto<\/strong>. As Photo\/Camera collectors, we have been bombarded with fakes over the years. Easy manipulation of cheap items to create very expensive ones are the rage.<\/p>\n

I once looked at ‘black’ Leicas that were so poorly painted they were obvious fakes – Leitz would never allow such shabby work to get out on the market (factory serial number lists indicated the models were authentic, but as chrome versions and as such worth far less).<\/p>\n

In the spring of 1994, editor Ev Roseborough in his ‘Editor’s Notebook’ column reported a Scientific American article on fakes.<\/p>\n

Ev says, “Digital forgery can create evidence <\/i>for\u00a0<\/i><\/span>events <\/i><\/span>that never happened.\u00a0<\/i>This <\/span>statement, <\/span>accompanied by a\u00a0much-less-than-convincing example <\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>black a<\/span>nd <\/span>white, <\/span>a<\/span>ppears <\/span>on the cover of\u00a0Scientific American, <\/span>February <\/span>1994.<\/span><\/p>\n

“When <\/i><\/span>is Seeing <\/i>B<\/i><\/span>e<\/i><\/span>li<\/i><\/span>ev<\/i><\/span>ing<\/i><\/span>? <\/i><\/span>by William\u00a0<\/span>J. <\/span>Mitchell, <\/span>professor <\/span>at <\/span>M.I.T. <\/span>a<\/span>nd <\/span>author\u00a0<\/span>of <\/span>Th<\/i><\/span>e <\/i><\/span>R<\/i>eco<\/i><\/span>nfigur<\/i>e<\/i><\/span>d <\/i>Eye<\/i><\/span>, <\/i><\/span>M.I.T. Press\u00a0<\/span>1992, <\/span>voices <\/span>this concern <\/span>in <\/span>th<\/span>e s<\/span>ix <\/span>pages.<\/p>\n

“Much of <\/span>the method described has been\u00a0<\/span>available for home <\/span>computers with sufficient memory for a <\/span>considerable tim<\/span>e <\/span>and\u00a0advanced techniques have <\/span>been employed\u00a0here for <\/span>seve<\/span>ral <\/span>yea<\/span>rs.<\/span><\/p>\n

“All of <\/span>which is <\/span>significant to <\/span>photo-his<\/span>torians <\/span>who are concerned with authenticity, <\/span>to say <\/span>nothing of <\/span>our <\/span>law courts.\u00a0<\/span>Manipulation is <\/span>an <\/span>awesome <\/span>propaganda<\/a>\u00a0tool<\/span>, <\/span>as <\/span>mentioned earlier <\/span>in <\/span>this journal,\u00a0<\/span>Volume 15 <\/span>Number 3, <\/span>1989 [see Return of the Body Snatcher, p4].”<\/p>\n

With the \u00a0recent advent of so called ‘Artificial Intelligence’ [AI] programs on very powerful home computers, deepfakes<\/a> have taken on a whole new meaning. The AI version of actress Sydney Sweeney plopped in a wheat field is an example of the distortions created today by AI programs. \u00a0AI can be useful to handle repetitive, mundane tasks but can also be deceptive and sinister.<\/p>\n
