Fritz Spiess photographing on set<\/p><\/div>\n

Toronto<\/strong>. To the surprise of many folk, Canada has an active movie industry. It has expanded in recent decades with the burgeoning North American television industry and its constant thirst for new fodder.<\/p>\n

In issue 19-4 (some three plus decades ago) then editor Ev Roseborough celebrated the life and times of Fritz Spiess in his article, “Fritz Spiess – Dean of <\/span>Canadian\u00a0cinematographers”. Sadly, Fritz died<\/a> just over four year later in March, 1998.<\/p>\n

Ev begins by writing, “<\/b><\/span><\/span>Now retired<\/span>, <\/span>with accolades from all\u00a0branches <\/span>of <\/span>the industry, <\/span>we <\/span>may meet\u00a0Fritz <\/span>at our Spring and Fall <\/span>Fairs, <\/span>surrounded by pristine cameras; <\/span>but more\u00a0<\/span>than a co<\/span>ll<\/span>ector <\/span>of <\/span>photographica, <\/span>he is <\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>collector of <\/span>awards for his <\/span>work.<\/p>\n

“I have known Fritz for <\/span>many years since\u00a0<\/span>we share a great <\/span>love for the music of J<\/span>ohann Sebastian Bach. <\/span>Here Fritz has the\u00a0advantage of <\/span>having <\/span>been a student and\u00a0<\/span>chorister at <\/span>Thomas Schule in <\/span>Leipzig\u00a0from 1935 to 1943. Bach <\/span>was organist at\u00a0St. Thomas Kirche a<\/span>nd <\/span>taught at <\/span>the schoo<\/span>l\u00a0<\/span>in <\/span>1723. The <\/span>great choral tradition <\/span>continues.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Fritz receive<\/span>d his first <\/span>Zeiss-Ikon box\u00a0camera at the age of <\/span>six from his father, <\/span>a\u00a0photographer and photo dealer<\/span>, <\/span>as was his\u00a0<\/span>grandfather. <\/span>The family had been in <\/span>photography <\/span>since 1<\/span>896.<\/p>\n

“War service <\/span>interrupted his apprentice<\/span>ship which was <\/span>resumed in <\/span>1946 wi<\/span>th <\/span>the renowned portraitist Tita Binz, <\/span>in <\/span>Heidelberg. …”<\/p>\n
