Toronto<\/strong>.Our January 18, 2023 presentation on ZOOM features member Lorne Shields<\/strong> on the History of the Bicycle – 1st 100 years<\/strong>, We welcome this experienced speaker and expert on bicycle history.<\/p>\n

Lorne describes his talk as, “100 YEARS OF CYCLING\u2019S HISTORY FROM 1820 TO 1920\u00a0AS CAPTURED THROUGH THE LENS OF THE CAMERA.<\/p>\n

“SET OUT IN A CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER WHICH LED UP TO TODAY\u2019S MODERN BICYCLE AS WE KNOW IT.<\/p>\n

“SELECTED FROM HIS MOST RARE. HISTORIC, INTERESTING, IMPORTANT AND GRAPHICALLY APPEALING IMAGES.”<\/p>\n

If you have’t heard Lorne before, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Here is a bit of background info.:”Lorne Shields, of Thornhill<\/span> Ontario<\/span> has been\u00a0an avid\u00a0collector and researcher of early bicycling history for <\/span>some 55 years. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Some of his collection has been displayed at such organizations as the\u00a0Smithsonian Institution,\u00a0the Royal Ontario Museum, <\/span>Ingenium (<\/span>Canada\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Science & Technology<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Museum<\/span>)<\/span>, Cit\u00e9 d<\/span>e<\/span>s Sciences et de l\u2019Industrie<\/span> (museum)<\/span> in St. Etienne, France.\u00a0 His collection includes\u00a0virtually every facet of early cycling photographica, ephemera and memorabilia as well as the cycles themselves.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Lorne\u2019s specialty\u00a0and passion\u00a0is historic cycling photography.\u00a0 He has given talks on\u00a0early cycling photographica\u00a0at various museums, historical societies<\/span>, <\/span>universities\u00a0and\u00a0symposia\u00a0in Europe and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North America.\u00a0 A sampling of these venues include The Photographic Historical Society (America) at George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, the Photographic Historical Society of Canada<\/span> on multiple occasions<\/span>, the Michigan Photographic Society, the Bicycle Museum of America, Victoria College at the University of Toronto, The Ephemera Society of American in Greenwich Connecticut<\/span>, Velorama at Nijmegen in The Netherlands<\/span>\u00a0and at Guildhall in the City of London, England.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

“His presentations are always crafted to the intended audience. Th<\/span>i<\/span>s\u00a0presentation\u00a0<\/span>will <\/span>cover the history & development of the bicycle from 18<\/span>2<\/span>0 to 19<\/span>2<\/span>0<\/span>. <\/span>The images<\/span> have been <\/span>selected from the most historic, rarest, interesting, important and graphically appealing photographs in his collection.”<\/span><\/p>\n
