This advertisement touted a new way to measure light, <em>especially<\/em> critical in the early days of low sensitivity, somewhat contrasty colour film materials.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of reading <em>reflected<\/em> light values from selected shadow and highlight areas, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jollinger.com\/photo\/meters\/meters\/norwood_directorA.html\">Norwood Director<\/a> used a translucent hemisphere to gather <em>incident<\/em> light falling on the subject. The light value could then be translated into a correct camera setting giving optimal negative and transparency exposures. No wasted shots.<\/p>\n<p>The major reflected light meter makers responded by selling attachments like the Weston &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.westonmeter.org.uk\/westoninvercone.html\">Invercone<\/a>&#8216; (I have one) to offer readings of incident as well as reflected light. Some years later when sensitive CdS cells arrived on the scene, better meters like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jollinger.com\/photo\/meters\/meters\/gossen_lunapro.html\">Gossen Luna Pro<\/a> offered a means to take either reading as well (Gossen had a sliding hemispherical ball, tinier than the Norwood&#8217;s to accomplish incident light readings).<\/p>\n<p>This ad from the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=Fl4zAQAAMAAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">June 1947 issue of Popular Photography<\/a> is courtesy of good friend and photo historian George Dunbar.
