The <a href=\"http:\/\/historiccamera.com\/cgi-bin\/librarium2\/pm.cgi?action=app_display&amp;app=datasheet&amp;app_id=2889\">Aires Camera Industries Company<\/a> lasted less than a decade (1952 &#8211; 1960). While short lived, the company rode the wave of Japanese cameras crashing on the shores of the Western world routing most of the competing non-Japanese manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>This ad, tucked away on page 108, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=Hj8EAAAAMBAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=gbs_ge_summary_r&amp;cad=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">June 17, 1957 issue<\/a> of LIFE magazine touted the modest little <a href=\"http:\/\/historiccamera.com\/cgi-bin\/librarium2\/pm.cgi?action=app_display&amp;app=datasheet&amp;app_id=2921\">35mm camera made by Aires<\/a> Camera and imported by <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=de&amp;u=https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kalimar&amp;prev=search\">Kalimar<\/a> Inc in St Louis Missouri for North American consumption. The Kalimar company imported and rebranded many photographic products. At the end of 1999 it was bought by <a href=\"https:\/\/tiffen.com\">Tiffen<\/a> of Tiffen Filters fame.<\/p>\n<p>I remember admiring Aires cameras around the time I purchased my Minolta Super A and being pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Asian cameras (complete with their instruction books written in a strange language a bit similar to English :-).<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to fellow PHSC member George Dunbar (once an IBM photographer) for sharing the Aires ad in Life magazine&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto. &#8230; to borrow a line from a local radio station.
