\"Baltzly-Book-sm\"<\/a>Toronto, October 3, 2013<\/strong>. John Morden (press@phsc.ca<\/a>) is pleased to announce the first book published by PHSC Press<\/strong> is now available. Secure the Shadow<\/em>, by Robert G. Wilson<\/em> is the exciting story of the life of Benjamin Baltzly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Earlier \u00a0books on this 19th century photographer such as Andy Birrell’s<\/em> have covered Baltzly’s very successful work for Notman in the wilds of British Columbia in 1871. Dr. Wilson for the first time delves into Baltzly’s life from his early years in the USA, time spent in Canada through to his death back home in the states. Eaton Drug c1910 Catalogue Photographic Gear<\/p><\/div>\n

Toronto, October 31, 2017.\u00a0<\/strong>When I was a kid and a young adult\u00a0<\/span>Eaton\u2019s was\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0store in Canada<\/a>. Eaton\u2019s and Simpson\u2019s were on either side of Queen West at Yonge Street. The new Eaton\u2019s College Street blocks north on Yonge never caught on due to the depression but the\u00a0<\/span>Carlu<\/a>\u00a0room \u2013 and the restaurant \u2013 were scrumptious.<\/span>\u00a0In the early days of the last century, Eaton\u2019s tried to be the store for everyone with its catalogue. Missing were cameras and supplies. To that end, Eaton\u2019s offered a separate catalogue of Cameras & Photographic Supplies<\/a>. \u00a0The original catalogue belongs \u00a0to Robert Wilson who loaned it to the PHSC to have copies made and included in a 25th anniversary issue of Photographic Canadiana<\/em>\u00a0back in 1999.<\/p>\n

My thanks to John Morden who\u00a0photocopied the booklet (available here as a free pdf).<\/a>\u00a0It includes a reference to the history of the stores as well. Browse through the little booklet to see the variety of cameras and darkroom materials offered over a century ago by one of Canada\u2019s most famous businesses.<\/p>\n

E & H T Anthony was the biggest and most prestigious American photographic supplier in the 19th century. As such, this catalogue offers insight into the equipments and materials available in North America during the late 1880s. Near the end of the 19th century Eastman and Kodak became serious competition. In fact, in the next century Kodak superseded Anthony as the leading photographic supplier on the continent.<\/p>\n

Toronto, January 30, 2022<\/strong>. Dr David Kenny has written this delightful book about Thomas Bradt, an amateur photographer, and the glass plate photos he captured over a century ago.<\/p>\n
