Wilson<\/em> is the exciting story of the life of <em>Benjamin Baltzly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier \u00a0books on this 19th century photographer such as <em>Andy Birrell&#8217;s<\/em> have covered Baltzly&#8217;s very successful work for Notman in the wilds of British Columbia in 1871. Dr. Wilson for the first time delves into Baltzly&#8217;s life from his early years in the USA, time spent in Canada through to his death back home in the states. The book is in full colour and profusely illustrated. 75 pages, soft cover. $45.00. Shipping Canada $3.50. Eaton\u2019s and Simpson\u2019s were on either side of Queen West at Yonge Street. The new Eaton\u2019s College Street blocks north on Yonge never caught on due to the depression but the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: center;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Carlu\">Carlu<\/a><span style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0room \u2013 and the restaurant \u2013 were scrumptious.<\/span>\u00a0In the early days of the last century, Eaton\u2019s tried to be the store for everyone with its catalogue. Missing were cameras and supplies. To that end, Eaton\u2019s offered a separate catalogue of <a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Cameras-Photographic-Supplies-T.-Eaton-Drug-Co.pdf\">Cameras &amp; Photographic Supplies<\/a>. \u00a0The original catalogue belongs \u00a0to Robert Wilson who loaned it to the PHSC to have copies made and included in a 25th anniversary issue of <em>Photographic Canadiana<\/em>\u00a0back in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>My thanks to John Morden who\u00a0photocopied the booklet<a href=\"http:\/\/phsc.ca\/camera\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Cameras-Photographic-Supplies-T.-Eaton-Drug-Co.pdf\"> (available here as a free pdf).<\/a>\u00a0It includes a reference to the history of the stores as well. As such, this catalogue offers insight into the equipments and materials available in North America during the late 1880s. Near the end of the 19th century Eastman and Kodak became serious competition.
