Some Thoughts on the NEX-6

My NEX-6

My NEX-6

The end of January 2013, when Vistek offered the NEX-6 and kit lens on sale for a great price, I leaped at the chance. Sold out! Oh Well, I left my order up anyway. To my surprise and delight, the camera arrived a week and a half later.

The NEX-6 is nice to use. Compared to my NEX-5, it is much faster in operation, has the flash built-in, and most importantly, it has a superb eye-level viewfinder built-in as well. Less important is the standard hot shoe and wi-fi capability. However, I have found the wi-fi capability of the camera to be very useful for remote shooting and image uploads. In terms of applications, Sony is no Apple by a long shot. The best you can say is that the Sony apps don’t crash… I eventually got the wi-fi apps to work, sort of. Continue reading

Winter Camerama has Good turnout

GP-Leica-M6-150x150Gary Perry hosted his latest show on Sunday  January 27, 2013 at the Toronto Don Valley hotel at 1250 Eglinton East (Wynford Drive by the DVP).

Ed Warner, who attended Sunday, offers this report: “Good show today, every table FULL, lots of shoppers, to the extent that sometimes it was hard to get to see the stuff on the tables.   However, THAT is a GOOD thing, because it shows that people are coming out to the shows, and “The TRADITION” is not going to fade away, at least NOT SOON. See you at the next [PHSC] meeting [February 20th, 2013].  Ed

TOOLS of the TRADE Sunday, April 7th, 2013

TORONTO, February 17th, 2013. The spring Tools of the Trade show for 2013 will be held on Sunday, April 7th, 2013 from 10am to 3pm at the Pickering Recreation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm Road, just 15 minutes east of Toronto. Click here or on the icon at left to see detailed directions.

toolgroupPHSC Member Ed Warner who is a past president of the PHSC, is now editor of Yesterday’s Tools the official journal of the Tool Group of Canada. The Tool Group of Canada was established about 30 years ago for collectors who specialize in the tools used by the craftsmen of days gone by.

To many of us, a camera is a collectible but it is also a tool used by a professional photographer. Hence a few members of the PHSC are also members of the Tool Group. When he was alive, both my dad and I were members. His interest was mechanics’ tools – the wrenches, tire jacks and other tools used by the automobile mechanic while I was interested in old wood-working tools. Over the years that I was a members of both groups, I attended the occasional Tools of the Trade show where I saw many kinds of tools including cameras and microscopes, not just hand tools.

THE TINTYPE STUDIO
tumblr_meq0poJpUw1qkt8ozo1_500-smToronto’s Tintype Studio revisits a historical photographic tradition, creating a unique image on a metal surface. The Tintype Studio revives this process in its traditional context, the outdoor fair, by offering a fun, participatory, and retro take on the instant photograph. Its tintype portrait service and period-style booth give the public a chance to experience a chapter in the history of photography and take a piece home with them.  The studio members are Miles Collyer, Stu Sakai, Paul Sergeant and Greg Snow.  Join us tonight and discovery beauty of this old process that dates back to the wet-plate era and has survived in the hands of these modern day Tintype photographers.

The public is welcome.  Go to our Programs page for times and directions.
