George Hunter Memorial

Hunter by Lansdale

Hunter by Lansdale

Mississauga, April 26, 2013. Carol and I attended the memorial for George Hunter last Saturday along with a large number of other friends and family. A slide show gave attendees a look back over George and his accomplishments. More about George is shown here in this wikipedia article.

The society was represented by past and present members including Bob Lansdale, who photographed the event, Rick Bell, Harry Joy, Tom Bochsler, Brock Silversides and myself. Eulogies were initiated by Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion, Brock Silversides of U of T, and well known photographer and author Tom Bochsler. The photo shown here is the last one taken by Bob Lansdale at George’s last annual barbecue held each year at his home in Mississauga.

George Hunter – Dead at 92

George-Hunter_RLMississauga, April 10, 2013. It was with sadness that I learned of George’s death last Wednesday, April 10, 2013. He died peacefully in the Credit Valley Hospital. Doing a Google search will bring up a wealth of information on George and his colourful personal history. You say George is not familiar to you? Well, if you were around in the 70’s and 80’s you probably saw his photos on Canadian stamps and currency. For example, his work is on the back of the $5  (salmon) and the $10 bills (petroleum industry). Continue reading

Tintype Studio has a new web site

The new nome of the Tintype Studio's web site

The new nome of the Tintype Studio’s web site

Toronto April 16 2013. Paul Sergeant and the guys have been busy. Very busy. Visit their spanking new website at www.tintypestudio.net.

On the site are details of their coming events, including a display and portrait sessions during CONTACT next month at the Campbell House Museum.

Never heard of it? Campbell House has been around for many decades. It’s that neat brick house on the northwest corner of Queen and University in Toronto. If you click on the Tintype Studio image above, you will see where I mean. Look in the lower left corner.  The four lanes of traffic going south with the boulevard and statue are University Avenue.

The shot? It’s a black and white photo I took with my Leica in early 1979 from a Toronto hotel room during a break from a seminar.

NOTE: Thanks to George Dunbar, I took a second closer look. The photo of Campbell House is from my Leica IIIf shot on Kodak Tri-X ASA 400 film from the Hilton Hotel on University Avenue just below Queen Street while attending a division conference in the hotel, not on an aircraft flight. The “early 1979” date is correct (and no aircraft were  harmed in the shot:-).
