Have you seen our clips – FOUND!

Lightweight_aluminium_frame_4_panel_jumbo_display_board__67230UPDATE: Bob Lansdale is pleased to report the missing clips have been found. Thanks to all who checked!

At the end of the auction on Sunday we lost a bag of clips used to hold the PHSC displays together (you know, the fuzzy boards like at the left, touting the fair and our next Toronto meeting).

Bob Lansdale was taking the display apart at the end of the auction, and we think someone may have put the bag of clips in his/her box of stuff by accident. Please check it out and drop me or Bob a note at info@phsc.ca. Thanks folks.

wayback-toolbar-logoToronto, September 12, 2003. Have you ever done something dumb – and instantly regretted it? Some months back I pulled John Krug’s “Photographers of Ontario” link because I thought his site was closed. Not so. The other day John emailed me that his site was up and well after being down briefly during some work on it. Continue reading

TORONTO, ON, September 2, 2013. Bob Lansdale sent me this note regarding the MiPHS show next month. The folks in Michigan have long been exchange members and contact for our editor on stories and leads.

In the summer of 1986, I went with Bill Belier (a past president of PHSC) and Pat Agnew (a past editor of the PC) to visit the Michigan show. It was a great show with many Leitz items including a 5cm Elmar enlarging lens in excellent condition which I bought. If you have time next month drop in. The admission is just six dollars – five if you print a copy of the attached ticket. Enjoy!

W. J Moore Panorama Photographs

Moore-portrait-228x300Toronto, August 12, 2013. I am a fan of BC’s public television. Occasionally the Vancouver station (Knowledge Network) shows a brief story featuring a Vancouver area panorama by W J Moore. If your TV able etc company doesn’t carry Knowledge Network, you can easily view to station on the internet.

Vancouver Archives recently featured an article on Moore. Their link includes a connection to Flickr! and a series of Moore’s photographs. A century ago Moore bought a Kodak Cirkut #8 camera which he used in the first 15 years of his business.

Moore was born in Quebec in 1887 along the Ontario border just north of Ottawa. He learned the craft of photography in Alberta working for his brother-in-law Byron Harmon in Banff before moving on to Vancouver in 1912 and a professional career as a photographer in our great west coast city.

Timothy O’Sullivan, 19th century photographer

Timothy O'Sullivan

Timothy O’Sullivan

Kitchener, August 4, 2013. My oldest daughter, Suzy, reminded me today about this famous Irish-American wet-plate photographer. I was first introduced to O’Sullivan’s beautiful photographs decades ago in the 1970s series of Time-Life books on Photography.

O’Sullivan practiced his art at a time when the darkroom had to accompany the photographer into the field so plates could be sensitized, exposed, and developed before the emulsion dried. This was a herculean task that damaged the wooden cameras of the day as the wet emulsion dripped down across the wooden camera backs.

O’Sullivan worked in the 1860s and 70s beginning with the American civil war. The images shown here at the Daily Mail site are his work post civil war covering the American west and its indigenous people. In 1882 O’Sullivan finally succumbed to tuberculosis. He was only 42.

On August 5th the Network will show a half hour feature about photographer Foncie Pulice and his subjects at 8pm Vancouver time (11pm Toronto time). Continue reading

William (Bill) Belier 1920 – 2013

Bill Belier April 2007 by Bob Lansdale

Bill Belier April 2007 by Bob Lansdale

Toronto, July 18, 2013. Past President of the PHSC and past editor of the Photographic Canadiana, Bill Belier passed away peacefully at St Joseph’s Health Centre in Toronto. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated next Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at All Saints Church on Royal York at La Rose (just above Eglinton).

Bill was well known in the photographic industry and in the PHSC. He was president in 1983 – 85 and organized the very successful PHSC 10th Anniversary PhotoHeritage 1984 seminar and dinner at York University. Completing his tour as president, Bill became editor of Photographic Canadiana from 1985 – 1986, although he was a major influence on the magazine throughout his presidency.

Once he completed his support of the PHSC, Bill became closely involved with the Rotary Club. We enjoyed the Rotary Club’s delicious Christmas cakes for many years. A more detailed coverage of his activities is included in his obituary published in the Toronto Star
